    English-Cantonese Bilingual Educator Intern California Academy of Sciences 19 reviews - San Francisco, CA 94118 Internship POSITION SUMMARY: Reporting to the Assistant Manager of School Programs within the Department of Teacher and Student Engagement, the School Programs Interns are responsible for assisting in the facilitation of onsite and distance learning experiences for students. This position joins a team of bilingual educators that have been running bilingual programs for 6 years. Bilingual Educators must be fluent in Cantonese and able to read/write in Chinese but are not required to have technical-level translation skills. The internship provides an in-depth, hands-on experience for people interested in pursuing a career in informal education. The internship is individualized to meet the needs and interests of each intern. Interns participating in the program will learn teaching techniques, gain an understanding of how to communicate with students of varying ages and backgrounds, and participate in the behind-the-scenes organization and projects. This internship is open to anyone who fits the qualifications below. We can also work with interns who are seeking academic credit, or need a project-based experience to fulfill a graduation requirement. This position is excepted to last until May 24, 2019. ESSENTIAL DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES Assist education staff in teaching and assessing lessons and activities Prepare and maintain supplies, educational materials, classrooms, and work spaces Help organize and refine digital assets, such as images, slides, and video Assist in the behind-the-scenes organization of outreach efforts Actively participate in staff meetings, trainings, and programmatic evaluation Provide administrative support as needed Facilitate learning with students and families who may not speak English Follow all Academy safety regulations Other duties as required QUALIFICATIONS To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE Bachelor's degree- completed, or in progress Some experience in informal education or a formal classroom preferred KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS and ABILITIES Attention to detail, organizational and time management skills Excellent interpersonal and communication skills Openness to new ideas and flexibility to constantly refine programs Basic knowledge of life sciences Working knowledge of Microsoft Office computer programs Strong public speaking skills; comfortable speaking to groups of 40 people at a time Willingness to learn and strong desire to support the Academy's mission LANGUAGE SKILLS Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups or individuals. Bilingual (spoken and written) in Cantonese. SCHEDULING REQUIREMENTS This internship is of a fixed length, but can be modified to include the optimal hours or project-based focus needed for academic credit. Applicants must be available at least two weekdays per week (Monday-Thursday) from January - May or September - December. Participation is encouraged at occasional group trainings.
