    WESTWOOD PROFESSIONAL SERVICES, INC. is seeking a Principal Engineer to join our team in our Lansdale, PA office. The Principal Engineer will be a part of the electric transmission design team and will be responsible for the technical oversight, quality review, planning, engineering, and design of multiple projects ranging from small “quick turn-around” to large complex transmission lines. The position will require the organizing of design activities, including quality reviews, monitoring project schedules, identifying risks, reporting changes affecting schedule and budget, presenting opportunities to improve designs, mentoring junior engineers, and supporting client relationships. Westwood has a highly experienced and dynamic team of individuals dedicated to providing high-level professional services to our clients. 

    DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

     

    • Work with various clients, design teams, proposal teams, and technical committees
    • Develop tools, software, or engineering work methods & procedures to improve efficiencies
    • Coordinate with clients, design team, decision-makers, proposal teams, and technical committees
    • Perform engineering design, QA/QC Checks, Technical training to junior engineers
    • Review technical proposals, drawings, procedures, internal & client-based standards, bill of materials, plan & profiles, foundation designs, structural steel designs & drawings, constructability designs
    • Maintain updates to department standards and QA/QC procedures
    • Serves as an overhead transmission line design technical subject matter expert and has knowledge and skillset to provide consultation and guidance to project teams and clients.
    • Demonstrates thorough knowledge and understanding of NESC, NEC, ASCE, ACI, and IEEE standards necessary to design transmission lines.
    • Demonstrates thorough knowledge in the use of PLS-CADD, including all applicable programs of the suite (POLE, TOWER, SAPS & CAISSON)
    • Ability to perform all aspects of designs of high voltage overhead transmission line projects including but not limited to: o Line routing o Structure spotting o Structural analysis and design o Foundation design o Hardware selection o Conductor and shield wire selection o Material specifications o Technical support during construction
    • Plans and designs overhead transmission lines, including the right of way requirements, structure spotting, line configurations, hardware requirements, structure alternatives, and foundation options.
    • Independently perform or conduct reviews of engineering analyses, plans, and specifications, as well as material procurement and construction documents, and work with project planning, environmental, permitting, and construction management.
    • Develop technical specifications, prepare bid documents, and assist clients with bid and evaluation processes, including structure procurement and construction services.
    • Prepare and review design documents for construction, including plan & profiles, structure load tree drawings, structure framing, bill of materials, and foundations design drawings.
    • Demonstrates ability to understand and interpret geotechnical reports and extrapolate information needed for foundation design software including L-PILE and MFAD.
    • Leverages experience by mentoring and training lower-level professionals including top graduates entering the field of transmission line design.
    • Reviews junior engineer work or assignments.
    • Keenly focused on the production of high-quality work and supports continuous improvement efforts.
    • Understands client interests and develops approaches to accommodate these concerns in the performance of the work.
    • Demonstrates ability to work with limited supervision and guidance to execute and meet multiple project commitments.
    • Understands & meets schedule, and quality requirements.
    • Actively coordinates with internal and external team members on transmission line projects.
    • Works to advise Management on how to maximize ROI for the team.
    • Attend client technical review meetings and travel to project sites as necessary to gather data and interface with clients.
    • Provide internal training, and mentoring to the transmissions project engineering team.
    • Demonstrate the meaning of “responsible charge” as defined by professional engineering ethics.

    Required Skills Required Experience

     

    • Requires Bachelor’s Degree (Civil, Structural, or Electrical) from an ABET-accredited engineering program.
    • A professional engineering license in the US is required, with the ability to obtain licensure in multiple states,
    • (15) Years relevant experience as a Transmission Line Design Engineer in consulting or utility environment with at least (5) of the years leading and mentoring teams to deliver design and construction packages.
    • Proficiency with MS Office Software, including Teams, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Project.
    • Proficiency in Power Line Systems Software and other programs, including PLS-CADD, PLS-Tower, PLS-POLE, CAISSON, SAG10, MFAD, TFAD, and LPILE. Preferred experience with STAAD Pro and ArcGIS.
    • Proven ability to communicate effectively with clients, management, and design team through excellent verbal and written communication skills. A strong understanding of project management principles is preferred but not required.
