    Building Inspector Salary $21.20 - $30.75 Hourly Location Allen, TX Job Type Full Time Department Community Development Job Number 01935 Closing 1/10/2019 5:00 PM Central Description The purpose of this position is to ensure compliance with City building and maintenance codes for commercial and residential properties. This is accomplished by conducting field inspections and verifying compliance with codes. Other duties may include maintaining records, researching methods and codes, interacting with contractors and other departments, providing departmental support and interfacing with other City employees and citizens. This position does not provide direction to other employees. Essential Functions The information listed below is intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed by individuals assigned to this position. They are not intended to be an exhaustive list of all responsibilities, duties and skills required of this position . Ensures compliance of building codes and ordinances by conducting field inspections of commercial and residential properties, reviewing building, electric and maintenance codes, determining whether codes are being met, assigning citations when appropriate, conducting regular follow-up inspections, helping resolve problems, issuing certificates of occupancy and performing final inspections. Interacts with citizens, contractors and other departments by explaining code requirements and corrections, coordinating actions with other employees and departments, verifying City policies and procedures for the department and reviewing code compliance with product manufacturers, building designers and engineers. Researches methods and codes by studying manufacturers' literature, examining tests from code underwriters and laboratory testing agencies and reviewing plan documents and City codes for changes. Maintains records by entering information into the computer system, recording inspections, preparing inspector's tickets, correcting inspection information and writing correction orders. Provides departmental support by submitting payroll time sheets, purchasing supplies and conducting safety meetings. Job Requirements Formal Education / Knowledge Work requires knowledge of a specific vocational, administrative, or technical nature which may be obtained with six months/one year of advanced study or training past the high school equivalency. Junior college, vocational, business, technical or correspondence schools are likely sources. Appropriate certification may be awarded upon satisfactory completion of advanced study or training. Experience Over one year of relevant experience. Certification and Other Requirements Valid Texas Class C Driver's License Combination ICC Certification, Texas State Plumbing License and/or Trade license preferred. Must be able to obtain both ICC residential and commercial plumbing certification's and Texas State Plumbing Inspector's License within 24 months of employment. Supplemental Information Reading Advanced - Ability to read literature, books, reviews, scientific or technical journals, abstracts, financial reports, and/or legal documents. Ordinarily, such education is obtained in at the college level or above. However, it may be obtained from experience and self-study. Math Advanced - Ability to apply fundamental concepts of theories, work with advanced mathematical operations methods, and functions of real and complex variables. Ordinarily, such education is obtained in at the college level or above. However, it may be obtained from experience and self-study. Writing Intermediate - Ability to write reports, prepare business letters, expositions, and summaries with proper format, punctuation, spelling, and grammar, using all parts of speech. Ordinarily, such education is obtained in high school up to college. However, it may be obtained from experience and self-study. Managerial Receives general directions. The employee normally performs the job by following established standard operating procedures and/or policies. The employee may choose the appropriate procedure or policy. Performance is reviewed periodically. Budget Responsibility None. Supervisory / Organizational Control No responsibility for the direction or supervision of others. Complexity Work involves choices of action within limits set by standard practices and procedures. Professional judgment is required to apply the proper course of action. Interpersonal / Human Relations Skills Persuasion Frequent: From 21% to 50% of work time. Health & Dental Insurance The City of Allen offers a choice of two PPO Medical Plan options for full-time employees. Vision insurance is included through enrollment in either of these plans. Employees also have the option of participating in an indemnity Dental Plan. Coverage is available to all full-time employees and their dependents under these plans at group rates. Employee insurance coverage goes into effect the first day of the month following 30 days of employment. Insurance Coverage Basic Group Life Insurance and Accidental Death and Dismemberment protection is provided to eligible full-time employees in the amount of one time the annual salary up to a maximum of $250,000 for each benefit. Long-Term Disability Insurance is provided at no cost to full-time employees. The City of Allen also offers optional programs that include Short-Term Disability, Voluntary Supplemental Life, Dependent Life and Voluntary AD&D insurance group rates. Flexible Spending Accounts Participation in Flexible Spending Accounts through payroll deduction for Health Care and Dependent Care expenses is also available for full time employees. Wellness Program The City of Allen administers a wellness program for full-time employees which provides premium reimbursement for participation in various wellness programs throughout the year. Workers Compensation All employees are covered by workers compensation for injuries sustained in the line of duty. Holidays Employees receive nine paid holidays per year, including one personal day. Vacation Employees with less than five years of service are eligible to earn 80 hours per year. An employee with five or more years of service is eligible to earn 120 hours per year. Employees with ten or more years of service are eligible for 160 hours per year. Sick Leave Employees earn 72 hours of sick leave per year. There is no limit to the amount of sick leave hours accrued. Retirement The City of Allen participates in the Texas Municipal Retirement System (TMRS): All full-time employees must participate in the Texas Municipal Retirement System. TMRS is a qualified tax deferred retirement plan under Section 401 of the IRS. Seven (7%) percent of gross earnings are deducted each payroll as a pre-tax deduction and deposited into the member account. When an employee becomes vested and retires, the City provides 2-to-1 matching contributions. The City of Allen also participates in Social Security. Deferred Compensation The City of Allen offers an optional deferred compensation 457 plan in which employees can contribute a portion of their salary, before taxes, to a retirement account.
