Internship Description in which application is being made. I. DEPARTMENT
DESCRIPTION: Gumbo Limbo Nature Center sits on the barrier island just
off Boca Raton, on 20 acres of protected coastal hardwood hammock and
mangrove forest. Our nature center boasts immersive exhibits, a
wonderful elevated boardwalk, butterfly gardens, four large outdoor
aquariums, FAU's Marine Biology Lab, and a Sea Turtle Rehabilitation
Facility. Every year we host hundreds of thousands of visitors from near
and far. Our mission is to increase public awareness of coastal and
marine ecosystems through research, education, preservation, and
conservation. II. AVAILABLE POSITION(S): Gumbo Limbo Exhibits Intern The
intern in this position will be working with the Exhibits Coordinator at
Gumbo Limbo Nature Center to start categorizing, accessioning, and
storing a large collection of shells, skeletal remains, fossils and
other eco-facts. The objective of this project is to create a usable
educational collection to be displayed in a semi-open storage space.
This intern will assist with consolidation of the existing collection:
taking and recording details descriptions of individual objects,
processing and storing of objects, and developing a small exhibition of
key objects. III. ELIGIBILITY: * Must be currently enrolled in an
accredited college or university. * Have obtained and maintained a
minimum 3.0 GPA. * Have the ability to work a minimum of 12 hours per
week not to exceed a maximum of 25 hours per week. Hours are flexible,
but may include weekends and holidays. IV. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND
ABILITIES: The candidate must have good communication skills, strong
work ethic, be able to follow written and verbal directions, and be able
to establish and maintain good working relationships with others. In
addition, the candidate must have the ability to: * Be detail
orientated, with problem solving and analytical skills * Highly
organized, with an eye for patters and structures * Express technical
ideas, both verbally and in writing * Show proficiency in Microsoft
Office Suite The ideal candidate would also have some proficiency with:
- Biology, Environmental Education, Zooarchaeology, and/or Museum
Studies * Conduct detailed research on objects and biological specimens
- Handling of ecofacts and artifacts V. PROGRAM TERM: Minimum term one
(1) school semester (Fall 2018: August 27th through December 7th). VI.
EXPECTATIONS: Candidates selected for an Internship will be expected to
comply with all City and Department rules and regulations. In addition,
candidates will be expected to: * Complete the required amount of hours
in accordance with the college/university requirement. * While working,
wear proper attire in accordance with the City of Boca Raton's Dress
Code Policy. * Conduct him/herself in a professional manner at all
times. * Develop goals and objectives with the Department Internship
Coordinator. * Clock in and out each day and manage schedule with
assigned Division Internship Coordinator. * Ensure that all required
documentation required by the college or university is supplied to the
Department Internship Coordinator and completed prior to required
