    Position Information Position Information Present Position Number T0476V Role Code Title VIMS Summer Aide Position Title Science Writing Intern (Summer) Position Summary The Summer Science Writing Internship will provide an undergraduate/recently-graduated/graduate student with training in science communication, and allow him or her to initiate new writing projects, and tell the story of how VASG brokers science to community stakeholders. The internship offers students opportunities to develop interviewing, analysis, reporting, pitching and writing skills, and they will benefit from mentoring as follows: 1. Understanding basic in-house requirements 2. Developing story structure, leads and headlines, providing visuals/art 3. Fact checking, deadlines, editing skills, editorial process 4. Distilling complex topics 5. Interviewing skill development 6. Reporting skill development 7. Challenges in science communication As part of the application process, applicant should include a cover letter, reference letter, transcripts, resume and a link to a portfolio of work or two samples. Required Qualifications Any student who is enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program, or who has recently graduated from a program in communication, journalism, science writing, basic science, or other related field at an accredited institution of higher education in the U.S., is eligible for the internship. All qualified students are encouraged to apply; however, qualifies applicants from Virginia Institutions will be given priority. Conditions of Employment: Student who is enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program, or who has recently graduated from a program in communication, journalism, science writing, basic science, or other related field at an accredited institution of higher education in the U.S., is eligible for the internship. All qualified students are encouraged to apply; however, qualified applicants from Virginia Institutions will be given priority. There will be no additional allowance for transportation or housing costs, so applicants should consider their ability to find housing in Southeast Virginia, and to provide their own transportation to and from work. This is a non-exempt position, eligible to receive overtime in accordance with the Fair Labor Standards Act. This position may be subject to overtime during high peak times, etc. as directed and approved by the supervisor. This position is a temporary (hourly) position not to exceed 6 months. All hourly employees are subject to the limitations of the Virginia Manpower Control Program and total hours worked may not exceed on average 29 hours per week, over the course of a twelve month period beginning May 1 each year.
