Job Description

Columbia University, School of Professional Studies (SPS) seeks candidates to serve as a PART-TIME LECTURER to teach a graduate-level course in FOUNDATIONS OF LABOR AND EMPLOYMENT LAW. This course explores the legal framework governing labor relations, workplace ethics, and employee/employer rights in the workplace. In addition to a review of current developments and best practices, the course will cover collective bargaining, union organizing, disability law, privacy, and employment litigation. Other subjects will include handling employee complaints and working with legal counsel on the resolution of those complaints. The overall goal of the course is for students to attain a working knowledge of employee and employer rights and obligations in an effort to maximize the productivity of their organization and gain the confidence to make employee/employer-related decisions on a daily basis.  This will include developing the basis for protecting both employer and employee rights and the knowledge necessary to minimize legal exposure and communicate effectively with legal counsel on a variety of labor and employment law issues.

RESPONSIBILITIES

• Lead class lectures, instructional activities, and classroom discussion. 

• Attend all class sessions.

• Monitor and address student concerns and inquiries.

• Evaluate, grade student work, and assessments.

• Conduct office hours.

Qualifications

Columbia University SPS operates under a scholar-practitioner faculty model, which enables students to learn from faculty that have outstanding academic training as well as a record of accomplishment as practitioners in an applied industry setting. 

REQUIREMENTS - 

• Graduate degree, with a preference for a doctorate, in an area related to Human Capital Management

• Professional experience and demonstrated success in Labor and Employment Law in a law firm and/or industry setting

• Proficiency in multiple Human Capital Management disciplines preferred

PREFERRED SKILLS & EXPERIENCE

• 10+ years of professional experience in a role related to Labor and Employment Law 

• 2+ years of teaching experience, ideally at the graduate level.
