    The School of Biological and Physical Sciences is seeking applications for a full-time faculty position to begin January 2021.  The ideal candidate will teach geology and oceanography lecture and lab, environmental science program courses and/or chemistry courses, and possibly other courses in their area of expertise.  Faculty responsibilities include equipping students with the required skill set, facilitating classroom discussions, assessing student performance, and preparing students to be successful in their chosen profession.     REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:  This position requires a Master’s in Geology, Oceanography and/or Chemistry with a minimum of 18 hours in the discipline.  Preference will be given to candidates with Geology/Chemistry or Oceanography/Chemistry backgrounds; all levels of Geology or Oceanography and Chemistry (and laboratories if appropriate).  Teaching experience in oceanography, geology and/or chemistry is desirable.  Working knowledge of computers, computer software, and distance education is desirable.  Candidates are expected to uphold a strong commitment to the education of our diverse student body at DSC. This position may be required to teach on one or more campuses/locations.

    RANK:  Appointment level to any faculty position is dependent upon qualifications and experience.

    SALARY:  This is a Nine-month, tenure-track position.  Competitive salary depending on experience.  The College also provides a comprehensive benefits package.

     

    TENURE AND PROMOTION:  Tenure and promotion are awarded based on a review by a college-wide committee of the candidate’s contributions to teaching, service, pedagogy and scholarship.

    KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:  Under Direction of the Department Chair, successful applicants will support the mission of the Daytona State College and the School of Biological and Physical Sciences by:

    • Teaching entry-level oceanography and geology lectures and laboratories.
    • Teaching entry-level introductory and general chemistry and/or other topics in the candidate’s area of expertise (lectures and labs).
    • Applying a variety of instructional strategies appropriate to the needs of the student population and the standards of the discipline.
    • Developing clear syllabi and effective course materials.
    • Evaluating student mastery of skills and competencies required by course learning outcomes.
    • Participating in course and program assessment and curricular development.
    • Participating in discipline, department, and school meetings and activities.
    • Serving on department, school, and college-wide committees.
    • Participating in the promotion and continuing contract process.
    • Establishing and maintaining positive working relationships with students, faculty, and staff of diverse ethnic, cultural, and socioeconomic backgrounds.
    • Teaching on multiple campuses during day and/or evening hours.

     

    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:  The successful candidate must have a knowledge of areas of discipline to be taught; ability to establish and maintain effective professional relationships with students, colleagues and supervisors; ability to communicate clearly, effectively and professionally through oral and written communications; commitment to the community college mission; innovative and effective teaching; sustained and significant professional development;  service to the College, and be computer literate and able to navigate in a Windows environment.  Experience using a Learning Management System is a plus.
