    Job Description

    EDUCATION DEVELOPMENT CENTER’S CENTER FOR CHILDREN AND TECHNOLOGY has an opening for a Research Associate (I), reporting to a Project Director. Staff are primarily located in our New York City office, but location is potentially flexible.

    We are seeking a full-time research associate to work on two educational research projects: 

    • In the first, the successful candidate will help document the impact of the Library of Congress’s Teaching Primary Sources program on educators, students, and other stakeholders through interviews, case studies, and surveys.
    • In the second, the candidate will help design and execute an evaluation of an informal STEM learning program that uses mobile devices and public media assets to engage English- and Spanish-speaking families with children 4-6 years old.

    The position requires an individual with solid qualitative and quantitative research expertise, ability to communicate and conduct research with a wide range of populations, skill in working as part of a collaborative team, and ability to work independently and efficiently. In both projects, familiarity with the roles of technology and media in supporting learning, and a with culturally relevant approaches to teaching, are valuable. Finally, bilingual Spanish- and English-speaking candidates are preferred. 

    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

    The person in this position is expected to communicate clearly and courteously; to develop and maintain positive relationships with clients, consultants, collaborators, co-workers, field sites, and funders; and to work respectfully with EDC colleagues. The job requires adherence to EDC policies & procedures.

    Under general management guidance, the Research Associate (I) provides support to complex or multiple qualitative &/or quantitative investigation efforts, including:

    • Research & analysis, using established methods and independent judgment
    • Work with project team members to perform more advanced statistical tests, such as correlations, repeated measures ANCOVA, and regression
    • Documenting & cataloguing research activities
    • Performing and coordinating fieldwork and data collection activities
    • Maintaining records
    • Preparing recommendations
    • Drafting, revising plans
    • Writing, editing materials
    • Developing presentations
    • Disseminating information
    • Helping to coordinate and draft grant proposals
    • Assisting Project Director with tracking and completing key deliverables

    The Research Associate (I) also:

    • Coordinates administrative and logistical tasks
    • Coordinates quality assurance
    • Facilitates project teamwork and feedback exchanges
    • Collaborates to troubleshoot complex problems, proposing initiatives and recommending or negotiating solutions
    • Trains and provides guidance or administrative direction to junior staff; may coordinate the work of less experienced staff
    • May lead parts of a project or coordinate sections of larger projects
    • Must be able to travel

    Qualifications

    This position requires sensitivity to working with marginalized populations and providing thoughtful support to educators on how to teach difficult subjects, as well as educational achievement; excellent writing skills; demonstrable initiative, creativity, and flexibility; ability to work independently and effectively in groups; and strong interpersonal & organizational skills. A candidate with strong critical examination skills or experience using strengths-based frameworks is preferred. Fluent written and verbal Spanish is also preferred. Specific requirements:

    • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education & experience
    • Master’s degree in a related field preferred
    • With Bachelor’s degree, 5–8 years related research, education, public health or administrative coordination, requiring solid experience with computer applications (including databases), psychometric or statistical measurement techniques, and Internet research
    • With Master’s degree, 3–5 years related experience (as above)
    • Some prior project leadership or supervisory experience preferred
    • Bilingual English- and Spanish-speakers preferred
