Introduction to Public Health: Our task, as public health professionals, is to use our knowledge, skills, and passion to ensure that conditions exist so that all people have the potential to live healthy and productive lives. This requires understanding the causes of health disparities and effective interventions to promote health. But, it requires that we go further than that. We must engage in activities that advocate on behalf of the underserved and the disadvantaged to assure that they have an equal opportunity to experience conditions to optimize their health. Our activities may be related to health education, working with community coalitions, developing policies, or working with legislators to effect meaningful and lasting solutions. We must work vigorously to assure real improvement. We must exhibit a strong commitment to change, and an understanding of the actions and strategies needed to achieve that change. Introduction to BU School of Public Health: As a school of public health, our obligation is to understand critical issues, actively participate in our community, and inspire and teach current and future leaders to address pressing health issues. These leaders need skills to work collaboratively with affected communities and policy makers, and with each other, to create real, lasting change. Through research, education, and service, BUSPH is able to understand and address public health concerns locally, nationally, and internationally. The Schools activist approach will allow us to push our academic efforts even further and create change that will help to achieve improved health and better lives for all. Introduction to PHX (Life Long Learning): The Population Health Exchange (PHX) is SPHs lifelong-learning initiative.
