    POSITION SUMMARY: 

    Provide support and assistance to more senior radiological control technicians (RCTs), environmental technicians and survey technicians in conducting radiological monitoring.  Ensure documentation of radiological monitoring data collection is complete. Perform surveys to determine radiation and contamination level, airborne particulate and gaseous radioactivity levels.

    ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

    • Perform work and provide support to more senior RCTs in conducting radiological monitoring activities.
    • Establish work controls and develop Radiological Work Permits (RWPs) under supervision of a Certified Health Physicist.
    • Review project scope and identify equipment needed. Ensure instruments, etc. are in good working order.
    • Follow set standards, expectations and company policies providing leadership example to subordinates.
    • Perform oversight of job coverage for remediation projects ensuring ALARA.
    • Perform radiological characterizations and document findings/results.
    • Collect field samples using appropriate tools and equipment (air, soil, water, etc.).
    • Ensure documentation of radiological monitoring data collection is complete; assist with documentation of data conversions; work with project management and radiation safety staff to ensure data entry is accurately completed and technical validation is completed and documented.
    • Monitor the surveying of equipment, material, tools, etc., for levels of radioactivity and/or contamination.
    • Monitor the source checking of instruments to ensure accuracy prior to use; perform instrument calibration using appropriate radiation sources.
    • Perform surveys to determine radiation and contamination levels, airborne particulate and gaseous radioactivity levels.
    • Package contaminated clothing, material, parts and supplies as needed.
    • Perform shipments of hazardous materials and waste in accordance with DOT and EPA guidelines; complete manifests.

    Required Skills

    SKILLS & ABILITIES:  • Ability to complete advanced mathematical calculations (algebraic, common and natural logarithms, square roots). Ability to calculate point source, line source, shielding, efficiency. • Ability to communicate clearly (oral and written).

    • Skilled in calibration of radiological instruments required to conduct sampling of material and equipment. • Skilled in the use of radiation detection meters, NaI probes, gamma spectroscopy, and air monitoring systems. • Ability to manage and supervise others. • Ability to perform tasks and activities independently and without direct supervision

    Required Experience

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS;

    EDUCATION/TRAINING:

    AS/BS degree in Health Physics or related science program; DOE Core Academics; 40-Hour HAZWOPER Training.

    KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE:

    • Practical knowledge of health physics coverage as it relates to radiological work activities.
    • Technical knowledge related to reduction of worker exposure. Specific experience should include a working knowledge of the regulatory requirements that pertain to radiation protection (10 CFR 835 or 10 CFR 20).
    • Basic knowledge of basic health physics principles and theory.
    • Basic understanding of radiation detection instrumentation and operation.
    • Experience tracking and handling radioactive sources as well as legal transport of such sources.
    • Experience in proper handling, storage, packaging and/or shipment of radioactive/hazardous material.
    • Experience in proper identification of radioactive/hazardous materials.
    • Extensive knowledge of proper safety requirements including use of PPE and respirators.
    • Demonstrated knowledge of Integrated Safety Management.
    • Demonstrated knowledge and experience with fire safety and industrial hygiene.

    SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:     

    • Valid state driver’s license.

    • Ability to pass a pre-employment background check.

    • Ability to pass HAZWOPER physical, respirator fit test and random drug screens.

    • Must be able to travel frequently and for long periods (week to month) as required by projects.

    CERTIFICATIONS:

    DOE Core Academics; Radworker I and II training; 1st Aid/CPR.

    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

    BS degree in Health Physics or Radiation Protection.
