  • Responsibilities

    The Plumbing Manager will manage the Plumbing, Automatic Sprinkler and Gas Fitting activities for Boston University. The Manager will be responsible for maintenance, repair and operation of facilities, as well as applying for plumbing permits, Boston Water and Sewer, and BFD permits and Impairment Orders.

                   

    Responsibilities include:

    • Evaluate backlog and emergencies and call in outside contractors to supplement in-house staffing when deemed necessary. Oversee the performance of outside contractors for quality of workmanship, accuracy of billing, and timely completion of work. Approve vendor invoices.
    • Provide cost estimates for both in-house and third party jobs. Advise and recommend courses of action to achieve desired results in a cost efficient manner which is in compliance with federal, state, and city codes and regulations.
    • Oversee maintenance of and verify accuracy of records pertaining to outstanding and completed jobs, overtime and payroll time sheets, daily travel vouchers, contractor’s time and material sheets, and plumbing inventory.
    • Prioritize outstanding requests for services, estimate labor hours to complete each request, and assign requests to appropriate tradesmen. Expedite emergency requests as received, utilizing available manpower, and when necessary re-establish priority of daily assignments as emergency requests are received. Evaluate and estimate supplies needed to complete requests, measure against in-house inventory and order as needed. Distribute supplies to tradesmen as necessary and allocate inventory costs to proper jobs. Monitor performance of tradesmen.
    • Coordinate all plumbing related special projects and renovations, supervise completion of work and coordination with other trades areas. Coordinate these activities with schedules mandated by other University departments involved in these projects. Manage automatic sprinkler testing, repairs, and record keeping, NFPA 25
    • Establish and reinforce safety guidelines for tradesmen to minimize risk of injury and related workmen’s compensation claims.

    Required Skills

    Vocational/technical training required; bachelor’s preferred with 8 years of related work experience.
