    Boston University’s National Emerging Infectious Diseases Laboratories (NEIDL) is a state-of-the-art high- and maximum-biocontainment research facility studying selected pathogens and developing diagnostics, vaccines, and therapeutics to combat emerging and re-emerging disease threats. The NEIDL is designed and constructed with the highest level of attention to community and lab safety and security.

    We seek to find a Senior Research Clinical Veterinarian or Research Clinical Veterinarian with commensurate experience and qualifications. This position serves an essential professional role in Boston University’s Animal Science Center (ASC) as a dedicated veterinarian for ABSL-2, ABSL-3 and ABSL-4 lab animal care and use at the NEIDL. The successful candidate will report to the ASC Senior Clinical Veterinarian assigned to the NEIDL. The incumbent will be involved in A) providing direction to technical staff involved in daily care and clinical oversight/support for research animals, B) assisting investigators to develop surgical and non-surgical animal models, and C) participating in disease diagnosis and experimentation in ABSL-2/3/4 research at the NEIDL

     

    Additional responsibilities include:

    • participate in ASC professional veterinary staff clinical and research programs and initiatives
    • participate in rotating on-call veterinary clinical coverage on weekends and holidays for all research animals at Boston University
    • monitor compliance of animal care and use with applicable institutional policies and SOPs, federal laws and regulations, and accreditation standards
    • participate in assigned activities of the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) and Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC)

    Required Skills

    • Veterinary degree (DVM/VMD) from an AVMA-accredited school of veterinary medicine or ECFVG (Educational Commission for Foreign Veterinary Graduates) certification with post-graduate work experience at a ACLAM-recognized laboratory animal medicine training program or equivalent
    • Licensure to practice veterinary medicine within the US
    • Eligible to obtain or have completed ACLAM board certification
    • Require knowledge and/or interest in animal models of infectious diseases; any hands on experience at ABSL-2, 3 and/or -4 levels is a strong plus
    • Preference will be given to those experience in animal handling, dosing, sampling and capturing physiological/clinical pathology data measurements and in necropsy of research animals in ABSL-2 or higher level biocontainment research.
    • Lab animal surgical skills and research study execution skills are highly desirable.
    • Require multi-tasking and ability to work synergistically with other key stakeholders including EHS, Facilities, ROHP, Security and Investigators etc.,
    • Must meet requirements and qualifications to assume delegated program responsibility in NEIDL
    • Must meet requirements and qualifications for the Personnel Suitability and Reliability Program including DOJ/FBI background checks and SRA clearance in order to handle select agents and work in the biocontainment environment.
    • Manage duties outside of NEIDL biocontainment as assigned such as weekend duty rotation.

    • periodic background reviews, including but not limited to: criminal background, credit history, drug screening, and behavioral evaluations;
    • periodic checks and regular renewals of security credentials, any applicable licenses, and verification of the successful completion of any required training at the facility
