Job Description

As one of our Groundskeeper B crew members, you will be part of the dedicated team responsible for preparing, maintaining, and enhancing Notre Dame’s outdoor athletic venues. From natural and synthetic turf fields, you’ll help create safe, high-quality playing surfaces that support both varsity athletics and recreational sports. This role also contributes snow and ice removal, and game-day event support—ensuring our student-athletes and visitors enjoy an exceptional experience year-round.

Key Responsibilities

Athletic Surface Preparation & Maintenance

• Prepare, maintain, and perform minor repairs to natural grass and synthetic turf to meet safety and performance standards.
• Mow, aerate, fertilize, line, and groom athletic surfaces for daily practices, varsity games, tournaments, and recreational play.
• Monitor and adjust irrigation systems, drainage, and turf health to ensure optimal playing conditions.

Event & Game-Day Support

• Assist with the setup and teardown of athletic equipment, benches, goals, and other event infrastructure for in-season varsity sports and recreational events.
• Provide on-site support during practices, games, and tournaments to ensure playing surfaces and equipment are safe and functional.
• Collaborate with coaches and Athletics staff to meet specific facility requirements.

Teamwork & Safety

• Operate equipment such as mowers, tractors, utility vehicles, and turf management tools safely and effectively.
• Follow University and departmental safety procedures at all times.
• Collaborate closely with fellow Grounds staff and Athletics personnel to ensure consistent, high-quality service.

Qualifications

Required:

• High school diploma or GED.
• At least 1 year of experience in groundskeeping, landscaping, turf management, or related work.
• Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions and perform physically demanding tasks (lifting, bending, standing for long periods).
• Willingness to work evenings, weekends, and holidays as required by athletic schedules.
• Skill Qualifications: Working familiarity with equipment utilized in athletic field maintenance, landscape maintenance, and snow removal. Thorough knowledge of safety standards associated with athletic field management.

Preferred:

• Knowledge of athletic turf management, irrigation systems, or sports facility preparation.
• Experience with snow removal equipment and grounds machinery.
• Turf management certification or coursework.
