    Shenandoah University seeks a professional and enthusiastic individual to serve as a Student Mental Health Clinician in the Counseling Center office. This is a 10-month benefitted position based on our main campus in Winchester, Virginia.

     

    Shenandoah University’s Student Mental Health Clinician's primary role is providing individual and group counseling for SU students. Successful candidates will be experienced providing treatment in many of the following areas: crisis intervention, brief therapy, working with diverse populations, sexual assault, mood disorders, and/or self-injury.

    The Student Mental Health Clinician utilizes a counseling approach that responds with sensitivity and confidentiality to the diverse needs of the SU students. This Clinician develops and evaluates psycho-educational programs to various student groups and the campus community members as well as coordinates outreach activities to students. This employee will provide referrals, maintain student records and Counseling Center statistics, and resource information.

    As a fully-participating member of the Division of Student Affairs, this clinician structures all interventions and activities with a goal of enhancing students’ abilities to successfully progress toward degree completion and to maintain a healthy, productive life after graduation. The Student Mental Health Clinician position reports directly to the Counseling Center Director.

    SPECIFIC JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • To provide developmental and educational support to college students in the form of short-term personal counseling.
    • The clinician will be responsible for: conducting intake interviews, treating emotional discomfort, developing educational skills, academic advising, assisting students with college major and career choice, coping with problems of anxiety, assisting in obtaining treatment for seriously disturbed students, providing crises intervention and group counseling services for a similar variety of student concerns through individual and/or group interventions.
    • Additionally, the clinician will be responsible for designing and implementing effective outreach programs to help students meet some of their developmental, emotional, and educational needs. Related issues include the need to control anxiety, to learn to communicate effectively, to plan for the future, to study effectively, to become appropriately assertive, to cope with mood changes, and to address COVID-19 concerns.
    • Communicate effectively and respectfully, verbally, and in writing, within the context of varying beliefs, behaviors, orientations, identities, and cultural backgrounds.
    • Provide referrals for students to treatment providers in the community.
    • Provide services to students across all SU affiliated campuses across multiple platforms to include: SU main campus, ICPH, HPB, and Scholar Plaza (some travel may be required).

    Required Skills

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

    • Master's Degree in a counseling-related field from an accredited institution of higher education required, PhD preferred. 
    • Must be licensed, or license-eligible as a professional counselor in the state of Virginia within one year of hire.
    • Strong preference given to candidates with at least 2 academic years’ experience working in a college/university Counseling Center setting (or with college-aged students in an outpatient setting).
