Assist the Director of Website Development in the leadership of web development staff while partnering with Strategic Communication and Engagement leadership to translate division and university goals into website strategies and projects. Assist with the development and maintenance of the university website design and frontend systems for more than 70,000 content files across 8,800 public pages.
Provide direction per web design best practices and collaborate with design staff to create and implement new designs and graphics for use on the public website. Implement web-based systems to manage website content, with an emphasis on frontend display of dynamic and/or interactive information to website users.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE
PRIMARY DUTIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Management
Assist the Director of Web Development and Strategic Communication and Engagement (SCE) leadership to prioritize website projects, ensuring best use of website resources and opportunities for PR initiatives and support for internal divisional operations. Recommend best practices that reflect SCE priorities.
Assist the Director of Web Development, leadership, and the operations team in planning and implementing overarching changes to the public website templates and design.
In collaboration with Web development staff members, recruit, manage, and train Web development interns.
Research best-practice technologies and development techniques, and apply learning outcomes to relevant Web development topics such as organization of content, modern design, use of third-party JavaScript libraries to enhance user experience, and adherence to standards.
Work closely with web development staff to accomplish shared team responsibilities; maintain consistency of site code, structure, and content; and brainstorm.
Design
Lead divisional designers in establishing online design standards and templates that meet site objectives while supporting corporate university standards and Web design best practices. (Example: Collaborate in creation of email or webpage templates.)
Design Web pages and/or user interfaces and UI elements for the public website or other digital venues using applications such as Sketch, Illustrator, Fireworks, and Photoshop, and HTML/JavaScript/CSS for implementation. (Example: Design a custom page for the public website, or interface elements for the APU iOS apps.)
Create wireframes, storyboards, high-fidelity mockups to effectively communicate interaction and design ideas.
Ensure design and implementation is cross-browser and standards compliant and meets accessibility requirements.
Work with editorial, and design staff to obtain, clarify, and implement project specifications for web content and design.
Optimize and/or edit video for integration with the public website. (Example: Format, upload, and integrate “Special Message” videos.)
Web Technology / Development
Implement HTML templates and content using up-to-date responsive design practices and accessibility guidelines. (Example: Build web pages that automatically optimize themselves for small-screen devices.)
Manage Web-based tools, modules, and back-end applications that enhance the user experience on the university site, expedite the workflow process, and ensure accuracy and timeliness of content. (Example: Create tools to easily update content on the website, such as course descriptions or calendar events.)
Establish a web development environment, including devel, edits, staging, QA, and live migration paths where appropriate. Manage code archiving and versioning. (Examples: Management of development server and monthly archiving of website backups.)
Research and implement the propagation of APU content to third-party development platforms as needed. (Example: Apple’s iBooks and Newsstand)
Research external vendors as needed for website development or to add significant augmenting technologies to the website. (Example: Third-party site search tools, project tracking systems, or code libraries.)
Handle various aspects of ongoing website maintenance and quality assurance, including misspellings, broken or unsafe links, readability, and accessibility compliance issues.
Enhancing the user experience with custom or third-party JavaScript libraries as appropriate.
Use version control to submit code changes.
May be called upon to design and implement back-end interfaces between APU’s website and third-party systems, creating a seamless front-end experience where possible. (Example: Create code libraries to request event data from the university-wide event management system and display it on the website where needed.)
