  • Responsibilities

    The Coordinator for Campus Recreation & Wellness will have primary oversight of the Shenandoah Outdoor and Adventure Recreation (SOAR) Program, the South Campus Commons Pool, and various components of Clubs Sports. This is a 10-month, benefits-eligible full-time position, that serves an integral role in Shenandoah University’s Campus Recreation Department. The Coordinator will join other staff in helping students gain an education that fully engages them in a vibrant, healthy co-curricular environment. This position will be expected to work from August 1 - mid-December, and mid-January - June 30th, having a month off in the winter and the month of July off. This position will report directly to the Director for Campus Recreation & Wellness. 

    The Coordinator will lead outdoor activities that cultivate personal growth, develop interpersonal and outdoor leadership skills, and foster an environment for individuals to acquire a lifelong appreciation for the outdoors. These programs strengthen the Shenandoah University community dynamic through fun, outdoor group experiences. Through involvement in outdoor activities, participants develop basic skills for safe and environmentally responsible exploration of natural resources in the Shenandoah Valley and beyond. The Coordinator will be responsible for both the fall break and spring break trip opportunities. 

    The Coordinator directs the day-to-day operations of outdoor adventure programs, oversees the SOAR Rental Center, and the South Campus Commons (SCC) outdoor pool, and partners with Shenandoah University’s River Campus (Cool Spring) manager for programming and activities at that site. The Coordinator will also serve as a liaison between Shenandoah University’s satellite campuses in an effort to increase awareness and participation from all campuses. The Coordinator will be expected at the department and division-wide events including but not limited to Open Houses, Summer Orientations (June), Welcome Week, Move-in, and Commencement. 

    The Coordinator will be responsible for oversight of Campus Recreation & Wellness employees' first aid, CPR, Wilderness First Aid, and Lifeguard Certifications. The Coordinator will also handle the administrative responsibilities associated with Club Sports and serve as a resource on university policies and procedures as they apply to the Club Sports Programs. 

    CORE RESPONSIBILITIES FOR OUTDOOR ADVENTURE & RECREATION (SOAR)

    1. Manage the administrative operations of Shenandoah Outdoor and Adventure Recreation (SOAR) programs, including but not limited to maintaining trip records and statistics for assessment; strategic planning and expansion; budgeting; scheduling of events; marketing programs; and maintenance and procurement of equipment. 

    2. Lead SOAR’s Fall Break and Spring Break experiences. 

    3. Oversee day-to-day operations of the SOAR Rental Center. 

    4. Develop and enforce outdoor program policies, procedures, and risk management practices. 5. Recruit, select, train, and supervise work-study students and outdoor program student leaders. 6. Plan, implement and provide leadership for outdoor workshops, trips, and events for students, faculty, and staff, including both new and returning participants. 

    5. Develop and monitor a strategic plan for SOAR. 

    6. Administer team-building activities and participation initiatives across all Shenandoah University campuses.

    CORE RESPONSIBILITIES FOR POOL MANAGEMENT 

    This position will oversee the South Campus Commons Outdoor Pool. The pool operates from late April until mid-September. These requirements will be expected while this position is working. It is expected that for the month of July, proper protocols and coverage will be in place to continue day-to-day operations. 

    1. Oversee the day-to-day operations of the South Campus Commons Outdoor Pool. 2. Provide direct supervision of the Lifeguard staff. 
    2. Administer in-service training sessions for Lifeguard staff. 
    3. Coordinate university events and private pool gatherings. 
    4. Partner with Physical Plant to ensure proper pool maintenance is occurring. 
    5. Maintain the Pool hotline.

     

    CORE RESPONSIBILITIES FOR CLUB SPORTS 

    1. Oversee all student membership requirements, including waivers, authorized driver forms, uniforms, and membership dues. 
    2. Maintain a consistent line of communication with club advisors. 
    3. Assist in the club sports budget allocation process 
    4. Ensure that all clubs meet the university-required CPR/First Aid certifications. 
    5. Assist with website administration and marketing approvals.

     

    Required Skills

    REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: 

    1. Bachelor’s degree in Outdoor Leadership, Outdoor Education, or relevant field experience. 2. Experience providing leadership to co-curricular outdoor recreation/education programs and services. 3. Knowledge of and experience with evidence-based program evaluation. 
    2. Knowledge of personnel administration, marketing, fiscal management, and facility/equipment management related to outdoor recreation and adventure-based programs and services. 5. Current Wilderness First Responder or the ability to obtain within the first 3-months of employment. 6. Familiarity with the industry standards and preferred practice for outdoor recreation and adventure-based programs and services. 
    3. Experience managing student employees including training, scheduling, and payroll. 8. Current American Red Cross Instructor or the ability to obtain within the first 6-months of employment. 9. A valid driver’s license, reliable transportation, and the ability to drive 12-passenger vans.

     

    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: 

    1. Instructor level certification or training verification in at least one land and water-based outdoor pursuit. 2. Experience implementing service learning, leadership development, environmental education, and/or a range of technical and professional training programs. 
    2. Experience leading a broad range of outdoor pursuits and special events. 
    3. Experience with developing and implementing policies and procedures in compliance with industry standards or preferred practice. 
    4. Experience with multigenerational and multicultural participants. 
    5. Knowledge of opportunities for outdoor recreation and education in the region. 
    6. Experience with performance groups and organized sports programs. 
    7. Experience with team-building exercises. 
    8. Lifeguard certification
