    JOB TITLE: Center for Math and Science CHE Lab Assistant , Work-Study

     

    DEPARTMENT: Center for Math and Science

     

    PAY RATE: $11.25 per hour 

     

    NUMBER OF OPENINGS: 1

     

    Fall Semester 2018

    Spring Semester 2019

     

    DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

     

    • Preparing in advance for laboratory period.
    • Reading & editing the experimental procedure, the lab assistant's instructions, and any other special information that is provided by the course instructor or lab coordinator. 
    • Promoting safety in the laboratory.
    • Be alert for potentially unsafe behavior, practices, set-ups, and situations and correct them; and bring them to the attention of laboratory coordinator. 
    • Maintaining the laboratory; cleanup spills by proper methods, clean the hoods, the areas around balances, and the areas around instruments used during the laboratory period.
    • Properly store chemicals; refill reagent bottles as needed (make sure there are enough reagents for the next lab section).

     

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS 

     

    • Must be a science major (biology, chemistry...).
    • Must have a minimum of 2.5 GPA (3.0 GPA or higher preferred).
    • Must have CHE111 or currently enrolled.
    • Must have had college algebra or higher.
    • Must be familiar with proper usage/handling of chemicals.
    • Must be familiar with chemical safety.
    • Must be a CCD student and awarded work-study funds.

     

    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

     

    • Must be familiar with Excel spreadsheets, highly organized, highly detailed and possess

     

     

    TIME COMMITMENT

     

    10 to 20 hours a week (may not exceed 20 hours per week)

    QUALIFICATIONS:

    Education/Experience:

    Must meet CLIA 88 personnel requirements for high complexity testing (where applicable) and qualify as a general supervisor.

     

    Language Ability:

    Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents. Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community.  Ability to write speeches and articles for publication that conform to prescribed style and format.  Ability to effectively present information to top management, public groups, and/or boards of directors.

     

    Math Ability:

    Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry.  Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.

     

    Reasoning Ability:

    Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.  Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.

     

    Computer Skills:

    Word processing, Spreadsheets, E-mail

     

    Certificates and Licenses:

    Certification by a recognized certifying agency for clinical laboratory professionals preferred (ASCP, ASMT, NCA, etc.).Must actively demonstrate the pursuance of specialty certification in chosen field of clinical expertise.
