Position Information Position Title Occupational Safety Specialist Campus Bloomington Department ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH & SAFETY (UA-ENHS-IUBLA) Department Information Job Summary This position is part of the University Environmental Health and Safety ( IUEHS ) and reports to the Manager of Industrial Hygiene and Occupational Safety. The Occupational Safety Specialist ( OSS ) provides occupational safety services and expertise to ensure the safety of the University community including researchers, faculty, staff and students. The OSS interacts with other program areas within University Environmental Health and Safety. This role utilizes knowledge and professional experience to protect personnel via the identification, evaluation and control of hazards within working areas. This position is also responsible for the administration of key Occupational Safety and Health Administration ( OSHA ) programs to prevent job-related injuries among employees and comply with applicable governmental regulations. The OSS analyzes workplaces on campus and independently designs initiatives to control, eliminate, and prevent injuries caused by physical hazards. The OSS acts as a resource answering questions and offering expertise to ensure the safety and health of the University Community during construction and renovation projects. PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES : In coordination with others within IUEHS , ensures that the safety of staff and faculty are audited appropriately, and that all reasonable measures are in place to ensure and maintain a safe working environment. Audits the campus for safety hazards and compliance with OSHA safety requirements by inspecting Departments and providing information related to OSHA regulations as Departments request. Audits compliance with OSHA regulations and EHS policies. Investigates injuries and provides corrective action recommendations as necessary and track these recommendations to their completion. Performs job hazard assessments, conducts ergonomic evaluations, performs fit testing for the use of respiratory protection, recommends measures to control exposures/hazards including personal protective equipment ( PPE ), work practice changes, and engineering controls. Develops, reviews, and modifies occupational safety training programs as necessary. Conducts training for new and existing employees regarding safety issues. Coordinates the construction safety program for campus construction and renovation projects. Reviews construction and renovation projects to identify and evaluate anticipated hazards and establish controls in advance of construction work on campus based on campus procedures, policies, regulations, and best practices by coordinating with appropriate University offices. Communicates environmental health and safety concerns to project managers and others as appropriate. Communicates safety requirements to contractors in various ways, including during project kick-off meetings. Reviews contractor compliance with major safety program elements. Ensures that contractors and subcontractors complete the required University training prior to beginning work on campus. Provides safety oversight of University construction and renovation projects. Reviews and reports on-site construction and renovation project conditions based on established standards during regular site visits. Attends EHS and other departmental meetings as necessary to perform job duties. Conducts required record keeping activities. Writes reports documenting observations and recommendations for supervisors review. Provides written reports to external departments. Provides EHS technical consultation to university and non-university parties as requested. Develops, reviews, and modifies occupational safety programs, as necessary. Serves on the emergency response team as necessary. Maintains a high level of competence in the field of expertise via attending professional development courses and conferences, reviewing technical documents, and memberships with the professional organizations. Required Qualifications REQUIRED : Bachelors degree in Occupational Safety, Occupational Health, Science or equivalent and one year of full-time work experience in a related field or an ABET -accredited Industrial Hygiene degree. Possess a valid drivers license with the ability to be insured by Indiana University. Must have extensive knowledge of OSHA regulations. Must be knowledgeable of computer operations and use of appropriate software. Must have excellent written and verbal communication skills. Able to locate and use appropriate technical resources in occupational safety and health. The ability to read, write and to speak in a manner that others can understand and to comprehend in the same manner. Ability to present training sessions to large groups, utilizing appropriate technology. Ability to communicate with individuals of all level of experience and knowledge regarding environmental health and safety programs. Must have the ability to use various electronic instruments, telephone, computer, software, and training equipment. Equipment utilized: Various Industrial Hygiene monitoring/safety equipment including but not limited to: Gas and vapor meters, light meters, Sound Level Meter, noise dosimeters, Photo Ionization Detectors ( PID ), full face, half face, disposable and PAPR respiratory protection, respirator fit test equipment, fall protection equipment, computers, and other equipment needed for safety presentations. Preferred Qualifications Working Conditions / Physical Demands Must be able to drive a vehicle and use handheld instruments, phone and a computer. Must be able to use a ladder and lift fifty pounds from the floor to waist high. Must have the ability to wear appropriate personal protective equipment, including a respirator.
