There are currently 12 KIPP schools in the Bay Area educating 5,200 students in East Palo Alto, Oakland, San Francisco, San Lorenzo, San Jose, and Redwood City. In the fall of 2018, KIPP Bay Area Schools plans to open a new high school in East San Jose and a new elementary school in the Bayview Hunter's Point. Position Overview The KIPP Bay Area Schools Special Education Team is seeking a 3rd year School Psychologist Intern who is excited to help create safe, healthy, and supportive learning environments and who is looking for an opportunity to help children and youth succeed academically, socially, behaviorally, and emotionally. KIPP Bay Area Schools has schools in underserved communities around the Bay Area serving students from grades TK through 12. The School Psychologist Intern will have the opportunity to experience a variety of settings and will be a member of the Special Education and School Psychologist Communities of Practice. We are looking for two Interns - one to support our San Jose and Peninsula schools, and another to support our San Francisco schools. The positions are available this summer 2018. Why work at KIPP? At the end of the year, you will finish well-equipped for the role of full-time School Psychologist. Under the supervision of the Supervising School Psychologist, the School Psychologist Intern is responsible for the identification, placement, and follow-up of students referred for special education assessment. The School Psychologist Intern will also provide consultation to teachers and counseling of special education students under the supervision of Supervising School Psychologist. This position will include the following roles and responsibilities: Evaluation * Student eligibility. Identify students with disabilities by assessing student characteristics including cognitive and perceptual abilities, emotional adjustment, adaptive behavior, language development, learning potential, and social needs, utilizing non-discriminatory tools. * Legally defensible reports. Prepare comprehensive and defensible multidisciplinary psychoeducational reports of each student assessed; interpret assessment findings for staff, parents, and other authorized persons as necessary. * Positive behavior intervention. Perform functional behavioral analyses and assist in the development, evaluation and monitoring of behavior intervention plans. * Student mental health. Conduct Educationally-Related Mental Health Service (ERMHS) assessments in order to evaluate social/emotional development and mental health status of students. Provide individual and group counseling, behavioral coaching, positive behavioral support, and parent education and support. Consultation * Teachers. Consult with teachers in the development and implementation of classroom interventions and procedures designed to facilitate student learning and to overcome learning and behavior challenges. * Parents. Consult with parents to assist in understanding the learning and adjustment processes of children. * School leadership. Serve as a resource to school leaders in areas related to instructional strategies, school attendance, discipline, student social/emotional needs, and child abuse recognition and reporting. Program Development * IEP Meetings. Serve as a member of, and present assessment findings to, a multi-disciplinary IEP team. * Multi-Tiered Systems of Support. Participate with other faculty and staff members to design and promote tiered interventions and supports to address students who are at risk of failing at school. * Crisis intervention. Serve as a member on a crisis management team to address the mental health of students when necessary (e.g., death, illness, community or school trauma), conduct risk assessments and support staff with crisis management as needed. Attend and participate in a variety of meetings, conferences, workshops, seminars and committees, including, but not limited to, IEPs, parentteacher conferences, and Student Study Meetings.
