  • Responsibilities

    Sponsored Programs is part of the Office of Research, a group dedicated to aiding the research community in navigating the lifecycle of their work, from finding funding to creating proposals to helping inventions find their way to the public.

     

    Under the direction of the Manager, the RA provides administrative leadership by incorporating a significant amount of experience in support of multiple mid-size to larger departments' research programs and mission. Using research administration experience, coordinates all aspects of multiple grant and/or contract pre- and post-award activities. Assists in developing new funding opportunities and strategic plans regarding grants and/or contracts by providing guidance and counsel in regard to grant and/or contract administration which includes attending internal and external meetings, interpreting clauses, reviewing contracts, and resolving reporting and/or expense problems. Reviews associated policy and procedures and recommends changes to increase productivity and effectiveness. An RA typically administers multiple research projects such as: complex multi-PI or multi-unit proposals, grants and/or contracts; research portfolio for a more complex mid-sized to large unit; NIH-U, P and T awards; DOD awards; center or program grants; proposals with cost sharing; fixed-price contracts; Non-funded negotiations such as NDAs, user agreements. The RA participates in efforts to improve research administration including serving on university committees related to research administration. The OSP Manager provides overall objectives and in consultation with RA, develops deadlines. Work is reviewed for fulfillment of objectives and overall compliance with policy and procedures. The RA completes the majority of activities without direction; consulting with supervisor only in regard to new or unusual circumstances.

    Required Skills

    BA/BS and a minimum of 2 years of progressively responsible experience within the field of research administration/sponsored programs administration for the RA level, 3-5 years for the Senior RA. 

    • Experience with and knowledge of major federal/non-federal sponsors; federal circulars and typical administrative terms and conditions
    • Experience with electronic grants administration systems such as grants.gov, eRA commons, Fastlane and similar systems
    • Must be self-directed, possess good judgement and problem solving skills and be comfortable in a fast paced, deadline driven environment.
    • Demonstrated customer service and continuous improvement experience.
    • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
    • Adaptability, comfort and utilization of information systems. Strong Microsoft Office skills.

    Preferred Qualifications:

    • Advanced degree in business/public administration, finance or law
    • Contracting experience in the sponsored projects arena
    • Experience with “Lean process” principles

     

    While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle or feel; and reach with hands and arms and bend to lift items. This position requires the ability to occasionally lift office products, catering and supplies, up to 20 pounds.
