JOB DESCRIPTION
This is a temporary, intern/co-op position in the Fuel Design, Mechanics & Materials department. The intern will work with the engineering staff to support evaluations of commercial nuclear fuel products constructed from zirconium alloys, nickel alloys, and stainless steel.
Tasks may include:
Performance of engineering calculations using standard engineering analytical methods or computer codes
Preparation of documentation supporting engineering studies
Creation or modification of automation codes supporting engineering calculations
Compiling post-irradiation data gathered from fuel operated in commercial nuclear power reactors
Analyzing data for inclusion in material databases and correlations
Reviewing continued applicability of predictive material models
Fuel Design is a worldwide organization which supports the engineering needs for the company's global fuel products. Within Fuel Design, the Mechanics and Materials department has responsibility to design and analyze the fuel assembly components and materials in order to ensure that design margins are maintained and to valdiate that in-reactor performance meets expectations. Mechanical engineers perform stress, strain, and compatibility calculations to determine margin to design criteria. Materials engineers help to develop new fuel materials, maintain material specifications, and interface directly with manufacturing and vendors. Engineers also work closely with Fuel Reliability to monitor the in-reactor behavior of fuel products and keep performance databases current.
