Job Duties/Responsibilities Typical duties may include: * Assists in maintaining dockets and calendars showing the status of pending litigation, requests for legal opinions, and other matters, and through e-mail, reminding the staff attorneys, paralegals, and other staff members of deadlines for preparing litigation documents, opinions, and other such documents. * Arranges appointments and conferences for attorneys, paralegals, and other staff members. * Assists in composing and typing routine memoranda for signature by an attorney. * Assists in the preparation of correspondence, legal opinions, and other legal documents. * May prepare necessary travel and reimbursement documents for attorneys, paralegals, and other staff members. * Photocopies and makes arrangements for filing litigation documents in appropriate courts and for obtaining court transcripts. * Receives and screens telephone calls for staff attorneys, paralegals, and other staff members. Completion of an associates degree in Legal Secretarial Science, certification in Legal Secretarial Science, or certification as a paralegal from a program approved by the American Bar Association. Desirable Qualifications The ideal candidate for the Legal Secretary position has several years of experience in providing administrative support for litigators. This candidate has worked on dozens of demurrers and motions for summary judgment and is skilled in managing and maintaining litigation files. S/he is experienced in preparing motions and exhibits, preparing table of contents and authorities, and filing/e-filing with the court. This candidate knows how to prepare, process, and serve discovery requests and discovery responses and is familiar with the task of contract drafting. S/he is very capable in the use of Microsoft Office Suite, particularly with Word, Excel, Outlook, as well as other productivity tools, such as Adobe Acrobat. Ideally, this candidate is a team player and has a strong work ethics/he willingly steps up to assist others to ensure that big projects are completed on time. S/he is very organized; detail oriented; and has good follow through in completing tasks. Lastly, as a representing member of the districts Office of the General Counsel, this candidate presents and interacts professionally with colleagues, clients, court staff, and opposing counsel.
