  • Responsibilities

    Position summary:

    The primary job responsibility of the ESL instructor is to improve the English reading, writing and speaking skills of adults for whom English is not the primary language spoken.

     

     

     

     

     

     

    Required Skills

    Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

    · Offer Adult ESL class from 5:30-6:30 four times per week at the Sumner Boys & Girls Club.

    · Enroll and maintain 10-15 adults.

    · Conduct initial needs assessment including pre and post-test.

    · Create an environment that is conductive to learning and appropriate for the needs and interests of the participants.

    · Develop/follow ESL curriculum.

    · Monitor and track attendance.

    · Meet bi-weekly with Club Director to provide updates, challenges, progress, etc.

    · Provide written bi-monthly reports to site Director.

    · Communicate with families regularly about class schedule and progress.

    · Create materials for families to practice at home.

    · Create 2-4 family events in which families and their members both work together.

     

    General BGCB Expectations:

    · Healthy Behavior Modeling – Teaching youth/teens the importance of living an active, healthy lifestyle is a BGCB priority. As a result, all staff is expected to model healthy behavior while working with our members.

    · Inclusive Environment – BGCB values creating child-friendly environments, where youth/teens of all abilities can be successful and participate. BGCB expects employees to embrace its focus on inclusion of all members, regardless of disability or developmental challenge.

    · Continuous Learning – Building the capacity of staff is central to BGCB. The organization encourages and requires that all staff participates in annual professional development opportunities that continue to cultivate their skills in the youth development field.

    · Safe Spaces – Every staff member shares the responsibility for ensuring BGCB is, and remains, an environment free of sexual, physical, or emotional abuse.

    Required Experience

    Position Requirements:

    · Fluency in Spanish (speaking, reading, writing) required.

    · Bachelor's degree preferred.

    · Two to three years’ experience teaching ESL to an adult population - SEI endorsed

    · Ability to work with youth and families from a variety of backgrounds.
