    Shenandoah University’s Office of Counseling is accepting applications for a Mental Health Clinician. This is a full-time benefited position located on our main campus in Winchester, Virginia.

    Shenandoah University’s Licensed Mental Health Clinician is a skilled and enthusiastic collegiate counselor with a primary role of providing individual and group counseling for SU students. This individual will provide mental health counseling services to students in a manner that demonstrates commitment to the University mission and its diverse student population. Will provide developmental and educational support to college students in the form of goal oriented individual counseling.

    The clinician will be responsible for: conducting intake interviews, creating a treatment plan, and supporting students with a variety of mental health issues. Clinician will also provide crisis intervention and group counseling services for a similar variety of student concerns through individual and/or group interventions.

    This clinician develops and leads psycho-educational outreach programs to various student groups and the campus community members as well as coordinates outreach activities to students. This employee will provide referrals, maintain student records, and help coordinate resource information. Some travel may be required to Loudoun campus.

    The Student Mental Health Clinician position reports directly to the Counseling Center Director.

    The Mental Health Clinician Position is a 10 month position, with specific schedule to be arranged/determined annually by the director based upon the needs and demands of the student population.

    Required Skills

    Education:

    • Required Level: Master's Degree in a counseling-related field from an accredited institution of higher education required.
      • Field of Study: counseling psychology, clinical psychology, professional counseling, social work
    • Preferred Level: PhD
      • Field of Study: Earned a doctorate degree in counseling psychology, clinical psychology, professional counseling.

    Experience:

    • Required: Minimum years or range: Able to obtain licensure as a professional counselor in the state of Virginia within six months of hire date.'

      • Specific Type of Work: Experience working with college counseling and residential population.
    • Preferred Minimum years or range: at least two years of licensed counseling experience.

    • * Specific Type of Work: Experience working with college counseling and residential population.
      
    • A thorough knowledge of the principles, practices and techniques of counseling as applied to college student problems and developmental needs and the ability to apply such principles, practices and techniques is required.

    • A thorough knowledge of individual emotional and behavior patterns as well as social and economic factors that contribute to college student concerns is required.

    • Ability to participate in a learning environment that focuses on a collaborative, creative team approach to the delivery of department services.

    • Knowledge of psychological disorders and diagnostic skills are essential.

    • Understanding of Electronic Health Records and maintain the highest ethical standards applied to confidentiality.

    • Ability to participate in a learning environment that focuses on a collaborative, creative team approach to the delivery of department services.

    • Strong interpersonal and communication skills are essential.

    • Knowledge and experience of testing and assessment is preferred.

    • Flexibility for occasional evenings and weekends in order to meet the needs of the student population.

    • Communicate effectively and respectfully, verbally, and in writing, within the context of varying beliefs, behaviors, orientations, identities, and cultural backgrounds.

    • Successful candidates will be experienced providing mental health treatment for a variety of clinical issues.

    • Clinician should have experience with crisis management and safety planning.Preferred candidate will have experience with collegiate setting or young adult population.
