    Job Description

The Raclin Murphy Museum of Art strives to create positions for students to work closely with a specific Museum department while allowing moments for broad learning of museum practice.

The Raclin Murphy Museum of Art Education department hosts Open Studio, a monthly open studio program for visitors of all ages to explore their creativity in proximity to the Museum’s collection and exhibitions. Our Studio spaces amplify and complement the gallery experience through hands-on making and exploration of materials, prompting a deeper understanding and connection with art, ourselves, and each other.

These open-ended art-making sessions in the Studio space are "open" in many aspects—open to a diversity of ages, experiences with art and art-making, touchpoints/experiences with the Museum, etc. This position will plan and prepare the projects for these sessions, host sessions as both a friendly guide and representative of the Museum, and inspire creativity in all visitors to the Studios.

    Responsibilities:

    • Work with Education staff to develop an art activity suitable for and adaptable to a variety of participants.
    • Be a personable, approachable, and welcoming presence during the Museum's open-studio drop-in hours (12:00-5:00 p.m. once a month on the first Sunday) throughout the summer.
    • Be an active source of support (i.e. answering questions about projects, offering encouragement, demo-ing materials/techniques, talking with visitors as they work, etc.) in the Studios.
    • Steward the Studio space by ensuring art-making materials stay stocked, the space and its amenities stay clean, and Museum visitors follow general safety guidelines and expectations.
    • Acting as a Museum ambassador in the Studio setting which requires becoming knowledgeable about Museum programs, exhibitions, and frequently asked questions.

Skills and knowledge that will be gained:

    • Experience working in a professional Museum environment as part of the Education Department.
    • Familiarity with the Raclin Murphy's collection and general programming.
    • Better understanding of our community both on and off campus.
    • Increased confidence in communicating with a diverse range (age, gender, experience level with art, etc.) of visitors.
    • Creative problem-solving skills.
    • Strengthened skills in event planning and logistics at all stages of a program.
    • Experience working in a collaborative environment while also having opportunities to take initiative and be self-directed.

    Schedule:

    • 10 hours/month (schedule and commitments vary by week)
      • Sundays once a month from 12:00–5:00 p.m.
      • Regular planning meeting (Mon–Fri TBD) with the Curator of Education, Public Programs
