  • Responsibilities

    The Director, Occupational Health, a Nurse Practitioner (NP), is a self-directed health care provider, consultant, educator and coordinator of care. The Director functions as a primary provider for patients and collaborates with the Medical Director  and the Chief Health Officer of the University for ongoing patient care management and health and safety of faculty and staff. The Director applies the nursing process, assessment, diagnosis, planning, implementation and evaluation in providing nursing care for health problems. The Director is responsible for managing the Occupational Health clinic ensuring appropriate policies and procedures that support quality care and compliance with regulatory requirements. The Director also designs and delivers health promotion programs and other preventive programs based on employee needs.

     

    Responsibilities: Under the direction of the Occupational Medicine Physician the NP Director is responsible for providing direct patient care to employees and occasionally to students, including:

     

    1. Evaluates, diagnoses, and treats work related injuries and illnesses. Orders, interprets, and evaluates appropriate lab and diagnostic tests to assess patient’s health care needs. Evaluates outcome of patient care and makes necessary revision of care plans and arranges for follow-up. Collaborates with physicians and other health care professionals to manage patients care. Sets priorities for appropriate and efficient management of patient care that reflects effective management of time, resources, supplies and equipment. Records pertinent findings in medical record
    2. Has overall responsibility for managing and administering work related injuries and illnesses.
    3. Advocates for patients with work illnesses/injuries to ensure prompt and appropriate medical care. Educates employees as to the nature of the illness/injury and expected course of treatment. Collaborates with WC manager and utilization review agent for effective case management
    4. Develops and implements medical surveillance programs for pre-employment and periodic health maintenance to manage health risks – including MMR, PPD, Hepatitis B virus, tetanus, and other immunizations and screenings. Ensures that specific assessments and immunizations align with employee’s roles. Performs pre-placement physical exams for various employee groups.
    5. Collaborates with Human Resources, Faculty Staff Assistance Office and managers to ensure an effective process for assessing potentially impaired employees.
    6. Collaborates with the University’s Chief Health Officer and Executive Director of Student Health Services to develop the University’s COVID-19 protocols to ensure the health and safety of the University community.
    7. Develops and implements health prevention and education programs on topics such as ergonomics, stress management, and blood bourn pathogen exposure.
    8. In collaboration with the Occupational Medicine Physician develops, implements evaluates and updates clinic guidelines, policies, procedures and protocols.  Leads on-going quality assessment and improvement of clinical programs.
    9. Manages support staff and business functions (budget, finances, purchasing, maintenance) of the clinic.
    10. Maintains current knowledge of legislation and regulations that may affect requirements for the workplace, employees, delivery of care and function of the Nurse Practitioner.
    11. Identify appropriate quality control needs and implements quality Improvement procedures as needed.

    Required Skills

    1. Role requires expert clinical judgment to function in an independent role at a level generally accomplished through attainment of a Master’s Degree in Nursing with Occupational Health emphasis or qualifications of a Certified Occupational Health Nurse -Specialist.
    2. Must possess a current  Registered Nurse license and Nurse Practitioner license  through the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and current Adult  or Family Nurse Practitioner certification  through the American Nursing Credentialing Center  or American Academy of Nurse Practitioners-.
    3. Role requires the ability to be self-directed, demonstrate strong problem solving and conflict resolution skills; collaborate with patients, physician, staff, and other health care team members.
    4. Role requires eight years of related experience with extensive clinical Nurse Practitioner experience in Occupational Health and managing a clinical program.
