Job Description: Educational Advisor (Special Program Coordinator), TRIO Talent Search (TS) Program MCCC Unit Professional position, Grade 4 Grant funded, benefited, 43 weeks/year (August through June), 37.5 hours per week. Schedule: 7:30-3:30 M-F Location: Lynn Vocational Technical High School ABOUT TRIO TALENT SEARCH: The Talent Search Program is one of eight federal TRIO programs. The Talent Search program works to identify and assist individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds who have the potential to succeed in higher education. The goal of Talent Search is to increase the number of youth from disadvantaged backgrounds who complete high school and enroll in and complete their postsecondary education. NSCC's Talent Search (TS) Program, established in 2002, is a partnership with Lynn Public Schools (LPS). GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES : The TRIO-TS Advisor engages in outreach and recruitment of students in the target population, provides advising and services to program participants, and coordinates the services and activities of the program. The TS Advisor is an integral part of the implementation of the TRIO-Talent Search (TS) grant program. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Engage in outreach efforts to inform students, families and partner agencies of program services; Collaborate on the recruitment and selection of participants for the program to meet the overall requirement of students served and grant goals and objectives. Develop and deliver presentations, workshops, and other activities on preparing for postsecondary education, including career awareness, college admissions, financial aid, and other relevant topics. Using inventories and other tools, help students assess their interests, strengths, needs, and career options; help students develop goals and a plan/roadmap for postsecondary education. In small groups and one-on-one sessions: Provide information and guidance regarding secondary school course selection, preparing for college entrance exams, college selection, resources for locating public and private scholarships, and Federal student financial aid programs; Provide assistance in completing college admissions, financial aid, and scholarship applications; Help students advocate on behalf of themselves with agencies and schools regarding financial aid and admissions; Make connections for participants to services such as tutoring, test prep, mentoring, and dual enrollment courses as appropriate; Make connections for participants to education or counseling services designed to improve the financial and economic literacy of the participants or the participants' parents, including financial planning for postsecondary education. Coordinate and supervise college visits. Coordinate and oversee the provision of the TS tutoring services at the designated high school. Coordinate and oversee the provision of the TS mentoring program at the high school, including recruitment and training of mentors. Document assistance given and services provided using Blumen? database; maintain confidential records; run reports to track students' progress and program outcomes. Establish and maintain relationships with secondary institutions, postsecondary institutions, alternative education programs, and community agencies as relevant for specific program needs. Participate in program/organizational/departmental planning sessions, training and staff meetings. Perform other duties as assigned. SUPERVISION RECEIVED : Educational Advisor reports to the Director of Educational Opportunity Center (EOC), Talent Search (TS), and Upward Bound (UB) Requirements: Bachelor's degree in a related field with three (3) years experience and/or training in educational or career counseling, college registration, academic advisement, career development, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. Master's Degree in Education, Counseling, Psychology, or other related field a plus. Experience in high school settings or experience working with teens. Knowledge of higher education admissions and enrollment processes and/or college financial aid. Experience helping students assess their interests, strengths, and needs and developing goals and plans for postsecondary education preferred. Experience developing and delivering workshops and presentations. Experience developing and coordinating programs/activities for small and large groups. Strong computing skills. Working knowledge of Microsoft Office required; database / student records experience preferred; experience using social and mobile applications to promote services/engage constituents preferred. Demonstrated awareness of and sensitivity to low-income minority youth; Experience with TRIO programs desirable. Bilingual (Spanish or Arabic) preferred. Ability to work occasional early mornings, evenings and/or weekends. Successful experience interacting with culturally diverse populations. Candidates will be required to pass a CORI/SORI background check as a condition of employment. Additional Information: SALARY RANGE: Anticipated starting salary range $41,107.17- $43,000.00 for 37.5 hours/43 weeks per year (August through June). Actual salary will be commensurate with education and experience in accordance with the MCCC/MTA collective bargaining agreement.
