    POSITION SUMMARY: 

    This position functions as Scenic Charge Artist for the Schools of Theatre and Bass School of Music, and Oklahoma Children’s Theatre. The Charge Artist supports assigned productions through collaboration with staff, faculty, and students to execute all painting and scenic treatments. The Charge Artist also designs scenery for selected productions and supports the scene painting curriculum.

     

    DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

     

    • Demonstrate an attitude and behavior that reflects the values and mission of the department and University.
    • Execute scene painting, sculpting, faux treatments, and textures for assigned scenery and properties projects
    • Translate designers’ drawings, renderings, and paint elevations into samples and full-scale scenic treatments
    • Train and supervise students and other staff members in basic theatre artistic skills
    • Work independently and exercise creative judgment and discretion on a regular basis
    • Participates in curriculum delivery for scenic painting including practical training, supervision, and instruction of student assignments and projects
    • Design scenery for selected productions; typically, Oklahoma Children’s Theatre shows (small scale); attend meetings, generate designer draftings, paint elevations, and renderings for these designs
    • Coordinate scene painting budget and ordering paint materials & supplies
    • Other duties as assigned

     

     

    Required Skills

    • Excellent oral communications skills.
    • Experience in scenic painting & scenic design.
    • Color mixing, layout, and faux paint treatment skills.
    • Ability to interpret scaled paint elevations and develop them into full-scale scenic treatments.
    • Ability to organize and maintain inventory of painting supplies & tools.
    • Be comfortable working at heights on ladders and aerial lifts.
    • Ability to develop original design ideas.
    • Drafting/drawing and other technical design skills.
    • Ability to use an industrial sewing machine.
    • Excellent computer skills, with proficiency in MS Office Suite and at least one scheduling or calendaring application. Familiarity with Vectorworks or AutoCAD is desired.
    • Excellent problem-solving abilities.
    • Excellent leadership and management skills.
    • Clear, correct, and effective communication using the English language.

     

    Required Experience

    • A BA/BFA in Theatre or relevant professional theatrical/entertainment experience is required
    • A minimum of two years of a combination of experience to support the competencies required to perform scenic painting and scenic design is required.
    • A suitable combination of education and experience may be substituted for minimum requirements.
