In collaboration with the Criminology Department in the College of Liberal Arts and Finance and Business Office of Diversity and Inclusion, funding will be provided to help participants gain hands-on experience within various areas of the University Police Department. Students may receive academic credit for successful completion of the internship from their institution of higher learning. Student interns will also have the opportunity to engage with various units including: the Criminal Investigations Unit, Uniformed Patrol Division, Administration/Records, and the Community-Oriented Policing Unit. Interns will assist with investigative tasks, when appropriate, and will be permitted to observe in multiple criminal investigation situations, including but not limited to: interviews, investigative techniques, and crime scene/evidence processing. Interns may also have the opportunity to attend law enforcement related trainings or closely observe while officers participate in active trainings such as Tactical Response Team readiness training and firearms training. Additional duties may include, but are not limited to: administrative work, participation in courtroom procedures/processes, and other duties as assigned. Additional qualifications for interested candidates include: at least 18 years of age and currently enrolled as a student at an accredited college or university with a GPA of 2.5 or higher. Preference will be given to students who have completed at least two years of coursework at an accredited college or university. A standard background check, in addition to a CLEAN/NCIC federal fingerprint check, will be required prior to hiring. If the applicant has a valid drivers license, a motor vehicle check will also be required. Applicants are asked to submit a cover letter clearly stating their reasons for applying for the internship with The Pennsylvania State University Police Department, their relevant qualifications (may include coursework), and their expectations of the internship program. Additionally, interested candidates are asked to upload a resume, and a list of three (3) professional or academic references. Successful candidates will also be required to provide an original copy of their current transcripts.
