PATH is a global organization that works to accelerate health equity by bringing together public institutions, businesses, social enterprises, and investors to solve the world’s most pressing health challenges. With expertise in science, health, economics, technology, advocacy, and dozens of other specialties, PATH develops and scales solutions—including vaccines, drugs, devices, diagnostics, and innovative approaches to strengthening health systems worldwide.

The Data Science Intern will support work streams related to PATH’s Malaria Vaccine Initiative.

PATH’s Center for Vaccine Innovation and Access brings together our expertise across every stage of the long and complex process of vaccine research, development, and delivery to make lifesaving vaccines widely available to children and communities across the world. CVIA’s current portfolio encompasses more than two dozen vaccines either in development or already in use to protect against 15 different diseases. Our focus is on vaccines to address the leading diseases that claim children’s lives worldwide: pneumonia, diarrheal disease, and malaria; as well as other global health priorities, such as polio and meningitis. We work in partnership with national health ministries, pharmaceutical manufacturers, donors, international financing and regulatory organizations, and many others. PATH has led numerous global partnerships, including the award-winning Meningitis Vaccine Project and the Malaria Vaccine Initiative, which helped develop the first malaria vaccine candidate recommended for pilot implementation.

PATH’s Malaria Vaccine Initiative (MVI) accelerates malaria vaccine development and catalyzes timely access in endemic countries, toward a world free from malaria. Standing at the intersection of malaria and immunization, MVI is part of PATH’s Center for Malaria Control and Elimination and PATH’s Center for Vaccine Innovation and Access. As a component of the MVI work, we are conducting a Vaccine Acceptability Study (VAS) which examines attitudes and perceptions of this newly introduced vaccine in three countries.

DESCRIPTION OF THE PROJECT THE INTERN WILL COMPLETE:

During this internship, the intern will refine skills in data extraction from websites, data cleaning, management and transformation, and text and sentiment analysis using Natural Language Processing or Machine Learning techniques. The Data Sciences Intern will use the data collected and analyzed to generate insights around sentiment and perceptions of a newly introduced vaccine. This Data Sciences Intern will contribute to the use of this analysis in further study materials, including visualization of the results, and aid in translation of the findings into interview guides and tools. This work will offer insight into the timely and pressing issue of vaccine hesitancy and vaccine acceptability and will teach the intern how these analyses can be used and built upon for real world action. As a result of this work, the intern’s technical data extraction, data management, and analysis skills will be developed, in addition to their knowledge of vaccine acceptability and hesitancy.
