Behavior Intervention Paraeducator Renton School District 29 reviews - Renton, WA 98059 The primary purpose of this position is assist in addressing behavioral and educational needs of identified students. The incumbent interacts with students in classrooms, and throughout a school site, monitoring student behavior and implementing appropriate intervention strategies; supervises students referred to the Positive Behavior Support (PBS) room; and meets with teachers, administrators, other staff members, and parents/family to assist in coordinating intervention efforts and to report on progress toward student behavioral goals. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS*: * Meet with students individually and in small groups to identify behavioral concerns and expectations and to implement programs designed to address these concerns. Activities may involve study skills, anger management techniques, communications skills, social skills, and life skills. * Assist in planning, creating and adapting instructional materials and activities for identified students. * Maintain regular communications with classroom teachers and other staff regarding individual student progress on intervention goals; participate in meetings to exchange relevant information regarding identified students; report situations requiring immediate or further action to appropriate staff member. * Monitor behavior of students referred to the PBS room; coordinate assignments with referring teacher; assist students in completion of assignments, providing instruction as appropriate; make referral or provide feedback to other staff members as appropriate; arrange and maintain room for student usage. * Maintain records of student interventions as required by federal, state and local statutes and regulations; enter data related to student discipline and behavioral interventions into a student database; produce reports from database and analyze aggregated data for school-wide implications. * Supervise students on the playground, in the gymnasium, at the bus area, and other areas of the school campus. * Under the direction of the principal, provide support to teachers and support staff in the management of students displaying significant behavioral problems. * Assist classroom teachers and other instructional staff in designing and implementing strategies for maintaining an environment conducive to effective learning, applying techniques appropriate to the maturity, interests, and needs of enrolled students. * Assist in addressing emergencies by participating in the school crisis intervention response effort. * Provide clerical assistance such as typing, duplicating, transcribing pupil records and preparing instructional materials. * Maintain regular attendance; adhere to board policy and leave provisions as stated in the collective bargaining agreement. WORKING RELATIONSHIPS: Reports to Building Principal. Interacts regularly with building administrators, various building certificated and classified staff members; bus drivers, and the district transportation liaison. Contacts with individuals outside of the district include frequent contact with volunteer student mentors; occasional contact with counselors from outside agencies. WORKING CONDITIONS: The daily work is performed in an office setting and at various sites within the district. The job incumbent is frequently required to: be exposed to interruptions; and deal with distraught, angry or hostile individuals. The incumbent is sometimes required to: visually concentrate on detail; be confined to work station; be dexterous and/or precise; stand for prolonged periods; lift or carry heavy objects or individuals; be exposed to infectious diseases; physically restrain students; work outdoors in inclement weather; be exposed to clear threat to physical safety; and deal with bodily fluids. QUALIFICATIONS: Successful job incumbents will demonstrate a level of the knowledge, skills and abilities as listed below. Education and Experience 1. High school diploma or equivalent with two years of experience in a similar position. 2. Two years of college-level course work in counseling, social work, education, or a closely related field may substitute for the required experience. 3. Training or experience working with diverse racial, ethnic, and cultural groups is required. Experience working with school-aged children, particularly at-risk youth, preferred. 4. Introductory Level Training for Washington State Paraeducator Core Competencies 1-14 must be completed within 90 days of hire. 5. Completion of district-sponsored crisis intervention training within 90 days of hire. May be required to attend other trainings related to behavioral or educational interventions. 6. Individuals assigned to a site identified as having a school-wide Title I program must meet the NCLB requirements for highly-qualified (completed at least two years of study at an institution of higher learning, hold an associates degree, or have passed, with a score of 461 or higher, the ETS ParaPro Assessment). Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities * Knowledge of Positive Behavior Support or similar behavioral intervention program(s). * Knowledge of crisis intervention strategies. * Excellent human relations skills including ability to deal with distraught and angry individuals.
