Boston University's Ryan Center Physical Therapy Clinic (BUPTC) is looking for a qualified Senior Physical Therapist. The Boston University Physical Therapy Center is an outpatient, primarily orthopedic practice. This clinic is housed within the DPT program of Boston University, and as such was founded with a guiding vision of delivering care in line with the teachings of the program and being a practice to educate our students within.

The position of Senior Physical Therapist has two main responsibilities. The first and majority of effort will be devoted to patient care. The second main responsibility is that of effort in a specialty track which will be outlined below. Patient care must align with the practice patterns taught within the DPT program and in so are both guideline adherent and aligned with current best practice. Care will be delivered and billed along legal and ethical guidelines of billing practices in our profession. Patient care will incorporate elements of systematic outcome collection that is part of daily practice at BUPTC. This will include adherence to standards set for consistent collection of patient reported outcomes. Senior Physical Therapists will also aim for successful meeting of targeted productivity requirements. Senior Physical Therapists do not have direct reports however will direct the work of clinic aides to assist in patient care and clinic operations. Physical therapists will also collaborate with front office and billing staff for the successful organization of capacity to bill and collect on patient care delivered.

Alongside patient care will include is an expectation of participation in educational endeavors within BUPTC. This will include serving as a clinical instructor for part-time and full-time clinical rotations of DPT students. To be able to do so, Senior Physical Therapists will have successfully received APTA CI training. This is not a term of employment however an expectation to be able to supervise students. Senior Physical Therapists will also participate and aide, where qualified, in quality improvement initiatives, including participation with academic practicum of DPT students as indicated.

There are four tracks within the job title of senior physical therapist:

1. Senior Educational Physical Therapist – this track will have a primary role in the delivery of clinical education to DPT and/or post professional training at BUPTC. A portion of their FTE (agreed upon in conjunction with Program Director for PT Program or Program Directors for Residency or Fellowship) will be devoted to education, and can include any of the following responsibilities: teaching in DPT program, teaching in post-professional training programs at BUPTC, or clinic coordinator of clinical education (CCCE). This position will also work collaboratively with other senior physical therapists in relevant topic areas to produce/maintain advanced quality improvement initiatives and ensure clinic continues to provide, promote and engage in the best evidence informed practice.
2. Senior Research Physical Therapist – this track will have a primary role in performing research at BUPTC. A portion of their FTE may be supported through external grant funding (external or internal to BU), with the percentage effort reflected in the scope of the work being performed. This position will ideally collaborate with faculty in the department of PT at Sargent College and regularly disseminate research work from BUPTC to enhance both the clinic as well as the department’s visibility. This position will also work collaboratively with other senior physical therapists in relevant topic areas to insure implementation of research outcomes and advancement of best practice.
3. Senior Specialty Practice Physical Therapist – this track will have a focus on specialized practice within the clinic. There will not be regular FTE supported outside of clinical care, however this clinician will be part of the core team of PT’s involved in internal quality improvement projects, advancing their personal and the clinic’s collective practice in specified treatment areas, regularly participating in continuing education to furtherer these efforts, and in collaboration with other senior staff and faculty at SAR to advance PT practice at BUPTC.
4. Senior Administrative Physical Therapist – This track will have a portion of their FTE supported to aide in administrative responsibilities that are key to the success of the clinic. These responsibilities are in coordination the Clinic Director and Office Manager of BUPTC. This position will have oversight and monitoring of clinical metrics and be the primary person of contact for the staff for this responsibility. Related to this will include monitoring of quality of notes, assistance in patient satisfaction, and outcome collection. This position will also assist in the supervision and hiring of student aides including schedule development for the aides.

Matching of qualified candidates into one of the tracks outlined above will occur within the needs of BUPTC at the time of hire.
