Summer Internship - California Attorney Generals Office (Fresno) 2-L or 3-L Law Student Opportunity: Summer Internship in the Criminal Law Division, Appeals, Writs and Trials section of the California Attorney Generals Office The California Department of Justice, Office of the Attorney General, Criminal Law Division, Appeals, Writs and Trials (AWT) section in Fresno is currently recruiting students for clinical internships for the Summer of 2019. Deputy Attorneys General in AWT represent the People of California in predominantly post-conviction proceedings: prosecuting felony criminal appeals in state court, responding to petitions for writs of habeas corpus in state and federal courts, and prosecuting death penalty appeals. Deputies also handle criminal investigations, conduct evidentiary hearings, litigate recusal motions, and prosecute cases in superior court when a county district attorney has been recused or removed from the case. Each student in the summer internship program will draft Respondents Briefs in appeals from felony convictions to be filed in the California Court of Appeal for the Fifth Appellate District. Appeals typically involve issues of criminal law and procedure, as well as constitutional, evidentiary, and instructional issues. Drafting Respondents Briefs involves reviewing the record on appeal, conducting research, analyzing legal issues, and developing arguments. Each student is supervised by a deputy who reviews and critiques all briefs. Students will manage their own caseload. In addition to brief writing, students who are certified by the California State Bar may have the opportunity to argue before the California Court of Appeal or the Superior Court. Students accepted for the summer internship program must have excellent writing, research, and analytical skills. Coursework in criminal law, criminal procedure, evidence, legal writing and research, and appellate advocacy is strongly preferred. Work experience in the field of criminal law is beneficial but not required. Students are expected to work 40 hours per week for 8 to 10 weeks. These are volunteer positions; however, students may arrange to receive academic credit.
