Scholar Talent

At Success Academy, non-academic subjects aren’t ‘extra’ but essential. Scholar Talent and electives serve as critical, creative outlets for scholars to explore and develop their passions and talents in chess, debate, visual and performing arts. We expect Scholar Talent teachers to be masters of their craft and share their passion, talent and experience in the classroom.

Scholar Talent teachers focus on one specific content area: chess, debate, visual arts, dance, music or theater. Teachers collaborate across our network of schools to build world-class programs within their schools while investing the community in the vital role of the arts in education. They also engage in training with teachers and leaders across the network to benefit in targeted feedback and professional development related to their specific content area.

About this Role:

Theater Teachers at Success Academy build a classroom culture in which scholars develop a love of theater. They engage students with a repertoire that is relevant to their lives and interests. Theater teachers will design and execute professional-quality performance opportunities for all scholars.

You will be a good fit for this role if you:

• Have professional training in a rigorous theater program or extensive professional performance credit
• A 2-year or 4-year degree is a plus, but it is not mandatory

Music

About this Role:

Music Teachers at Success Academy build a classroom culture in which scholars develop a love for music. They inspire a love for music through rigorous lessons centering on scholar learning, creating, connecting, performing, and responding to artistic works within the genre. Music teachers will produce top notch concerts for scholars to showcase their music skills

You will be a good fit for this role if you:

• Have a track record of success in engaging students in music through creating, performing and participating in music
• Have teaching experience with a record of knowing and using music materials and resources to propel learning
• Understand the cultural dimensions and contributions of music

Dance

About this Role:

Dance Teachers at Success academy build a classroom culture in which scholars develop a love of dance. They engage students with a repertoire that centers scholar learning on creating, connecting, performing and responding to artistic works within the genre. They execute movement to demonstrate dance technique and choreography and design and execute professional-quality dance performance opportunities for all scholars.

You will be a good fit for this role if you:

• Have professional training in a rigorous dance program or extensive professional performance credits
• Enjoy working with children and implementing effective dance instruction

Debate

About this Role:

Debate Teachers at Success Academy build a classroom culture in which scholars develop a love for public speaking and debate. They invest the community in the vital role of public speaking and debate in education. Debate teachers engage students with challenging material that is relevant to their lives and interests and prepare scholars to compete in rigorous city, state, and national competitions.

You will be a good fit for this role if you:

• Have or will receive a Bachelor’s degree prior to your start date
• Achieved outstanding academic results
• Have a record of excellence competing in debate at the collegiate level or coaching at the middle school or high school level

Art

About this Role:

Art teachers build a safe and joyful classroom culture in which scholars develop a love for art. They engage students in the creative process and foster their talents, while deepening their knowledge and understanding of art, design, and art history.

You will be a good fit for this role if you:

• Have or will receive a Bachelor’s degree in: visual, fine, or studio arts - painting, drawing, sculpture and ceramics - or art education (degrees in graphic design, photography and fashion design are not considered relevant)
• Personal or professional experience with art, specifically drawing and painting
• Possess the ability to set ambitious goals for yourself and have a strong presence
• Possess effective classroom management skills

Chess

About this Role:

Chess teachers build a classroom culture in which scholars develop a love for chess and enhance critical thinking and problem-solving skills. They teach a rigorous chess curriculum to scholars that begins with chess basics and progresses to checkmate patterns and tactics. Chess teachers will coach and develop a high-performing team of scholars to compete in city, state, and national chess tournaments. In addition, they support our high performing competitive teams by coaching at tournaments at least 12 Saturdays per school year.

You will be a good fit for this role if you:

• Have a USCF rating of between 1700-2100
• Have an advanced understanding of the game of chess (tournament and online chess experience a plus)
• Have leadership experience (i.e.leadership position on a club or team; experience overseeing/managing people or organizing activities)
• Pay strong attention to detail, and have experience juggling multiple responsibilities and planning around competing priorities
• A 2-year or 4-year degree is a plus, but it is not mandatory
