  • Responsibilities

    SUMMARY OF POSITION:  The Behavioral Assistant Teacher has the responsibility to collaborate with the Lead Teacher to ensure that direct cross component services as defined in Head Start/Early Head Start Performance Standards are provided to children assigned to their unit.  With the Lead Teacher, they share the tasks of overall behavior intervention, record keeping, classroom management and design, as outlined in NAEYC guidelines and in the High/Scope Curriculum.  

     

    QUALIFICATIONS:

    1. Associate degree in Early Childhood Education or closely related field
    2. One year of experience working with preschool children
    3. Extensive knowledge in behavior intervention with preschool children
    4. Ability to communicate verbally
    5. Ability to communicate in writing
    6. Current driver’s license
    7. Complete criminal record check from Department of Health & Welfare’s Criminal History Unit prior to consideration for hire

     

    TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

    1. Treat participants, fellow staff and community members with positive regard.
    2. Adhere to a prescriptive schedule that provides adequate preparation for each class.
    3. Adhere to a prescriptive schedule that provides adequate time for evaluation each day.
    4. Adhere to a schedule of adequate break time(s) during the course of the day.
    5. Work one on one with individual children that need additional help in maintaining self-control to ensure classrooms are safe.
    6. Establish and enforce rules for behavior and procedures for maintaining order among students.
    7. Support children's emotional and social development, encouraging understanding of others and positive self-concepts.
    8. Meet with other professionals to discuss individual students' needs and progress
    9. Identify children showing signs of emotional, developmental, or health-related problems and discuss them with supervisors, parents or guardians, and child development specialists.
    10. Collaborate with center staff to ensure the classroom and center is an inviting and nurturing environment reflective of the local community. The cultures of participating families will be reflective of the local community.
    11. Assist the Lead Teacher in supervising assigned classroom staff and volunteers and assist in providing appropriate training and on-going evaluation.
    12. Observe and document the developmental level of each child. Individualize using appropriate tools and information from parents, staff and professionals to create an individualized plan for each enrolled child.
    13. Assist Lead Teacher to set up a classroom schedule appropriate for the High/Scope curriculum. Include representation of each individual's culture as well as the local culture shared by all. Plan, implement, evaluate and modify child activities, daily classroom activities, involving staff, and volunteers.
    14. Collaborate with center staff to recruit, train and support parent and community volunteers.
    15. Share current information with parents related to child progress and potential challenges.
    16. Assist the Center Supervisor and Lead Teacher with recruitment activities as assigned.
    17. Assist in developing appropriate procedures for the supervision and documentation of health checks, dental brushing and use of fluoride in the classroom.
    18. Plan and carry out individualized health and nutrition education in the classroom.
    19. Assist in planning and coordinating with the cook to conduct classroom food experiences.
    20. Participate in an individual continuing education plan including CPR and First Aid.

     

    ADDITIONAL:

    • Be an advocate for Head Start/Early Head Start children and families within the community.
    • Perform other duties as assigned.

    Required Skills Required Experience

     

    • Minimum one year of experience working with preschool children
    • Extensive knowledge in behavior intervention with preschool children

     

  • Qualifications
    • Doctorate in clinical or counseling psychology from an American Psychological Association (APA) accredited program
    • Must have completed an APA approved clinical psychology internship.
    • Must have attended a formal neuropsychological fellowship in clinical Neuropsychology, and be skilled in specialized testing and assessment procedure as recognized by either the National Academy of Neuropsychology or Division 40 of the American Psychological Association
    • Must have and maintain a current license to practice Clinical or Counseling Psychology.
    • Current BLS
    • Minimum of 7 years of training or experience as Neuropsychologist (PhD) or MD working with patients with traumatic brain injury required.
    • Must have 5-10 years experience in research as demonstrated by publications and presentations
    • 5-10 years management experience preferred.
    • Prior experience within the DoD/VA systems of care and providing clinical services to individuals, couples or groups in clinical psychotherapy services strongly preferred.
    • Knowledge and experience with military health system, combat/deployment issues, people suffering from medically unexplained symptoms, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, and/or disasters are highly desired
    • A strong background working with neurological patients, especially those with traumatic brain injury required.
    • Must be proficient in advanced neuropsychological testing sensitive to brain injury such as the Halstead-Reitan Battery, computerized performance assessment batteries, Mental Status exams and Dementia Rating Scales
    • Must be proficient in administration and interpretation of basic psychological test measures to include Intelligence Testing, Personality Testing with Objective and Projective Testing
    • Ability to function independently with a high degree of professionalism and clinical judgment required.
    • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to interact with staff at all levels to foster collaborative research activities required.
    • Excellent oral and written communication skills required.
    • Ability to facilitate and present information to small and large groups as well as the flexibility to re-prioritize quickly required.
    • Ability to manage stress, as evidenced by the ability to respond and to meet demands of caseload, such as submitting proper documentation and referrals required.
    • Must adhere to legal, professional and ethical codes with respect to confidentiality and privacy.
    • Must be a US Citizen
