Job Description: GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES: The Candidate will be responsible for patrolling the college facilities and properties, providing protection and service to ensure a safe and secure environment for faculty, staff, students and visitors. The STCC Police Department is a service intensive, community-policing agency. RESPONSIBILITIES: Patrol buildings, grounds and adjacent areas of a state educational institution by foot or patrol vehicle. Enforce state laws as well as the rules and regulations of the institution; restrain or arrest suspects when necessary. Investigate incidents/crimes and handle appropriately including related paperwork. Provide assistance to courts or grand juries in the prosecution of cases. At least one (1) year appropriate experience. Must be a graduate of an SSPO Massachusetts Special State Police Academy, a full Massachusetts municipal police academy or a full police academy approved and accepted by the Massachusetts State Police for purposes of obtaining Special State Police Officer certification. Must not have had a lapse of sworn law enforcement employment greater than the last three (3) years. Ability to complete firearms training and certification per State and college requirements. Ability to obtain a License to Carry a firearm. Must be CPR/AED and First Responder Certified Possess a current and valid Massachusetts Class D motor vehicle operator's license and clean driving record. Ability to prepare written reports of investigations, maintain accurate records and analyze data. Ability to follow and provide effective oral and written instructions in a precise, understandable manner. Ability to exercise sound judgment; maintain calm manner in stressful situations; make decisions and act quickly in emergency/dangerous situations, and maintain confidential information. Working knowledge of police procedures and practices and fire prevention methods; ability to recognize fire hazards. Working knowledge of the law of arrest and criminal procedure in lower courts. Working knowledge of the rules and regulations pertaining, in general, to the buildings and grounds of a state educational institution and the ability to apply and explain the policies and procedures to others. Ability to interface professionally with the public. Must understand and demonstrate community policing principles. Ability to maintain student discipline. Ability to walk alone for long periods of time both indoors and out under varying climate conditions. Knowledge of the principles and correct usage of the English language, including grammar, punctuation, and spelling. Ability to apprehend non-compliant and compliant offenders who break the law. Work is normally performed on a typical college campus. While performing the duties of this job, the employee occasionally works in outside weather conditions. The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, extreme cold, extreme heat, and vibration. It may be expected that the individual could be exposed to blood or other potentially infectious materials during the course of their duties. Must be willing and able to work nights, holidays, weekends, and overtime assignments.
