    Environmental Intern (35 Hour) Recruitment #180622-0196ES-001 Location Hartford, CT Date Opened 6/26/2018 12:00:00 AM Salary $40,939* - $56,352/year *new State employees with Bachelors degree/$42,416 with Masters Job Type Open to the Public Close Date 7/10/2018 11:59:00 PM Introduction Within the Department of Public Health (DPH), the Drinking Water Section (DWS) is responsible for developing, implementing, and enforcing state and federal regulations that ensure drinking water safety, quality, and adequacy is maintained for approximately 2,600 public drinking water systems. This Environmental Intern will support the DWS Enforcement Unit. The Enforcement Unit is responsible for ensuring compliance with State Statutes and regulations through enforcement actions. The primary duties associated with this position will be related to issuance of civil penalties, review of water quality data, drought analysis and standard operating procedure development. This Environmental Intern position is a permanent, full-time position and has a target class of Environmental Analyst 1 after successfully completing one year of employment. PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK) In a state agency receives training in introductory professional environmental work for the development of technical and professional skills and knowledge in order to qualify for advancement to the professional environmental work of the agency; performs a wide variety of increasing difficult duties as technical skills are acquired during the course of the training period. KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY Some knowledge of basic theories, principles and practices of environmental and policy analysis; some knowledge of basic statistics; general knowledge of environmental program planning principles and practices; interpersonal skills; oral and written communication skills; analytical skills; research and organizational skills; ability to understand and interpret legislation and technical data; ability to utilize computer software. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE A Bachelor's or Master's degree in a scientific or technical discipline related to the environmental field including but not limited to the biological, earth, or physical sciences; environmental planning; environmental law; leisure services; geographic information systems; geography with a concentration in geographic information systems; environmental or natural sciences; or natural resources. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS At a minimum, a bachelors degree in a scientific or technical discipline related to the environmental field including but not limited to the biological, hydrological, earth, or physical sciences; environmental planning; environmental engineering; environmental law; environmental or natural sciences; land use; or natural resources; Experience with data collection, technical analysis and interpretation; Experience utilizing knowledge of concepts or policies pertaining to environmental protection, public health, stormwater, water resource planning, drinking water protection, green infrastructure, and/or smart growth; Experience working with environmental and/or drinking water public health regulatory compliance; Work or academic experience in water quality analysis, drinking water protection measures or drought tracking and analysis; Experience utilizing ArcGIS for the production of digital and paper maps. WORKING CONDITIONS Incumbents in this class may be exposed to some danger of injury or physical harm from on site environments and moderate degree of discomfort from exposure to year round weather conditions.
