Psychiatric Aide 2 MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: One year of experience in psychiatric patient care or in providing care, guidance or training to the mentally retarded, physically disabled, or chemically dependent. SUBSTITUTIONS: College training with at least six semester hours per year in education, psychology, counseling, social work, sociology, child guidance, or nursing may be substituted for the required experience on the basis of thirty semester hours for one year of experience. A Mental Health Aide Diploma from a vocational technical college with an approved curriculum from the Louisiana State Board of Elementary and Secondary Education will substitute for six months of the required experience. Assists to create and maintain a therapeutic environment for mentally ill and/or substance abuse patients to include performing routine nursing duties such as taking vital signs and weighing patients. Records data on patients' charts concerning behavioral observations, vital signs, symptoms, accidents, injuries, etc. Cares for the personal needs of patients and assists them in good grooming, personal hygiene, eating, and the control of money and valuables.
