    Job Description

      We are seeking three Education Interns to join us for the 2022 season. This in-person opportunity offers hands-on experience in Museum Education. Education interns play a key role in supporting and leading tours for school groups and adults, assisting with Storm King’s public programs, and welcoming, engaging, and educating visitors. Interns will acquire the skills and knowledge to lead tours for audiences of all ages and demographics. Training includes lectures, independent research, hands-on workshops, tour observations, and participation in Education Department meetings and activities. Additionally, interns will assist and coordinate across departments to facilitate public programs ranging from artist talks, concerts, performances, and hands-on activities.

    The internship duration is mid-March through December 2022. The position is full time at 40 hours per week with a 30-minute unpaid lunch. Weekend work is required.

    ABOUT EDUCATION AND PUBLIC PROGRAMS

    Education and Public Programs reflect Storm King’s ongoing dialogue with art, landscape, and nature. Programming aims to spark immersion, inspiration, investigation, and innovation for an ever-expanding community of visitors.   Education initiatives include formal and informal learning opportunities and experiences, such as concerts and performances, lectures and artist talks, family programs, school and adult tours, yoga, moonlit walks, and more. 

    Primary/Essential Responsibilities and Duties

    • Welcome groups of all ages and demographics to Storm King.
    • Lead tours on the history, Collection, and Special Exhibitions, and artists.
    • Provide support for onsite and online artist-driven public programs.
    • Assist and facilitate Children & Families programs at Storm King and in the local community.
    • Lead hands-on activities for various types of groups.
    • Some administrative work such as note-taking, emailing, scheduling meetings, and research.

     

    OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES

    • Attend departmental and relevant institutional meetings.
    • Provide support for cross departmental programs and events on weekends as needed.
    • Some travel for events, outings, and departmental needs.
    • Other duties as assigned.

     

     REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

    • Must be at least 18 years of age and be a high school graduate or equivalent.
    • The role requires an enthusiastic, and organized individual who is comfortable working in an outdoor and indoor museum environment where collaboration, flexibility, and teamwork are essential.
    • Demonstrate consideration of diversity, inclusion, accessibility, and equity when working with Education Team and uphold standards when working on public programming and engagement.
    • Comfortable engaging and working collaboratively with peers, children, and adults – particularly in developing new relationships.
    • Personal and professional interests in the arts and nature are central to the position.  
    • Ability to work efficiently in an organized manner with minimal supervision.
    • Excellent communication skills are critical.
    • Proficiency with MS Office Suite.
    • Must be able to work weekends.

     

    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

    • Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree. Studies in art history, contemporary art, landscape architecture, environmental science and/or museum or classroom education are a bonus. Other subject areas will also be considered. 
    • Ability to speak Spanish strongly preferred.
    • Valid driver’s license with no serious convictions.

     

    PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORKING CONDITIONS

    • Works both in an office environment and outdoors onsite.
    • Ability to maneuver outdoors, in all weather conditions, on 500- acres of hills, grass, and gravel pathways.
    • Ability to stand, sit, or walk for long periods of time during events or tours. 
    • Frequently speaks, reads, writes, and uses a computer. 
    • Occasional lifting of less than 20 lbs., stooping, or bending.

    SALARY AND BENEFITS

    The hiring rate is $16.50 per hour. This position is eligible for the participate in the benefit programs generally offered by Storm King to its employees including medical, vision, dental, 403(b) retirement, life insurance, generous paid time off and more.     COVID-19 PROTOCOLS

    To keep our staff and visitors safe, wearing a mask is required when indoors. Before staff are permitted on site, they are required to submit a health screening questionnaire. Masks, gloves, and other personal protective equipment (PPE) as needed is provided, along with access to hand sanitizer.
