    The Practice Makes Perfect paid summer Teaching Fellowship offers you the opportunity to make summer learning engaging, fun, and impactful for students who need it the most. Serving as head classroom teachers at our partner summer school sites, Teaching Fellows are instrumental to achieving PMP’s mission of providing high-quality summer programming. Teaching Fellows craft engaging lessons, facilitate cultural learning, and serve as role models for our scholars and mentors. You will arise from this rigorous and rewarding experience having gained the experience, skills, and confidence necessary to be fully prepared for your future position as an educator, changemaker, and leader.

    During the program, Teaching Fellows will:

    • Complete mandatory 45 hours of training and orientation
    • Complete pre-program home visits and site-specific planning
    • Gain 100-150 hours of teaching experience with the support of a certified NY teacher (Teaching Coach)
    • Develop daily lesson plans and deliver instruction to scholars in reading, writing, and math
    • Design and lead enrichment activities including skill building lessons, spelling and vocabulary games and more
    • Assess scholar progress toward daily objectives and summer goals with the purpose of eliminating the summer learning loss and making gains in core content areas
    • Oversee and instruct mentors in how they can be most effective in their relationships with scholars
    • Lead mentor enrichment in leadership development and college preparation (this can include SAT prep, passion mapping, and more)
    • Create and maintain relationships with parents and/or legal guardians throughout the summer to share scholar achievements and reinforce classroom goals and expectations
    • Differentiate instruction for a wide-variety of learning styles
    • Develop and/or maintain a prescribed classroom and behavior management system -Gather and submit all required data (test scores, attendance, exit ticket scores, etc.) in a timely manner
    • Create scholar portfolios for each scholar – includes qualitative and quantitative data summaries
    • Engage in professional development sessions with PMP staff every Friday
  • Qualifications

    The Practice Makes Perfect Teaching Fellowship is available to sophomores, juniors, seniors, and graduate students pursuing a bachelor’s or master’s preferably in education and/or a related field.

    Candidates must also have:

    • A minimum of one semester student teaching or experience working in youth development and/ or working with children

    • Availability for all of training and pre-program planning (middle – end of June) and the summer program (July and early August)

    • Excellent organizational ability including planning, prioritizing, and time management.

    • A passion for education and a deep set belief in the potential of all students, regardless of race and socioeconomic status, to achieve success

    • Leadership experience and ability across a variety of settings

    • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to motivate others

    • GPA of at least 3.0 (If your GPA is below 3.0 we will consider your application, but require additional information on our application)

    The PMP Teaching Fellowship pays a $825 stipend for training and pre-program planning and an hourly rate of $17/hour during the 5-week program.

    Practice Makes Perfect (PMP) is a full-service summer school operator that aims to redefine the summer learning experience for all children. We partner with New York City public schools in high-need communities to provide high-quality academic summer programming. Our unique model pairs students with high achieving near-peer mentors in classes that are led by college Teaching Fellows and supervised by certified teachers.
