Provides clinical assistance to the professional faculty, instructs veterinary students in proper clinical techniques supporting primary care, and maintains a sanitary and functionally well organized service within the clinical teaching laboratory and the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital. Required Education and Experience: * Associate s degree in veterinary technology, biomedical science, animal science, or a related area or any equivalent combination of relevant education and experience. * Two years technical experience in veterinary medicine Required Knowledge and Skills: * Basic computer skills in word processing, spread sheets, and billing entry. Working knowledge of veterinary equipment used within a veterinary teaching hospital such as anesthetic machines, fluid pumps, blood gas analyzers, oscilloscopes, defibrillators, nebulizers, and endoscopic equipment. Other Requirements: * Ability to multi-task and work cooperatively with others. Preferred Education and Experience: * Certification as a Licensed or Registered Veterinary Technician. * One year relevant experience within the Texas A&M University System. Preferred Knowledge and Skills: * Previous history of proficiency in gas anesthesia induction patient maintenance and emergency response to cardiac arrest. Responsibilities: * Assist faculty veterinarians with instruction of anesthesiology and surgery procedures described in the professional veterinary medical curriculum and syllabi. * Provide direct support to faculty veterinarians of the Large and Small Animal Clinical Sciences departments, and indirect support to second and third year veterinary medical students enrolled in mandatory core curriculum laboratory courses in anesthesiology and surgery. Specific duties include assuming responsibility for and maintaining controlled substance inventories. * Correctly calculating and issuing controlled substances used for pre-anesthetic induction, patient maintenance during induction, following post anesthetic recovery, and post surgical pain management of teaching animals. Instructing and aiding veterinary students in calculating accurate drug dosages, instructing techniques and procedures required to insert and maintain intravenous catheters and fluid drip lines and administration of solutions required to maintain life and to deliver medications or replace lost body fluids. Instruct students in proper techniques allowing safe and atraumatic intubation of patient animals; to include proper assembly and attachment of a variety of anesthetic machines or ventilators and respirators. * Monitor anesthetized patients and provide oversight of patient vital signs during all phases and stages of anesthesia and post-surgical/ post anesthesia recovery. Recognize deviations from normal parameters describing safe anesthesia and vital sign signalment of surgical patients and apply necessary corrective measures to reduce patient risk or return vital signs to normal ranges. * Respond appropriately to emergency situations; perform CPR, apply cardiac defibrillators, initiate appropriate drug therapy as required to preserve life or prevent injury to animals utilized in the teaching laboratory. Instruct veterinary students and demonstrate proper function and application of a wide variety of technology and instrumentation common to veterinary practice; including patient monitors, physiographs, ECGs, fluid infusion pumps, and body warming devices. * Assist the faculty veterinary surgeons in completing clinical records review/editing entries in teaching animal charts; assist the veterinary surgeons in examining teaching animals for post-surgical complications and for monitoring animals to guarantee that proper veterinary care has been administered daily. Assist veterinary students, as required, with providing necessary post-surgical wound treatment and systemic health care. Assist faculty veterinarians with preparing and assembling course syllabi, class notes or information hand-outs. Provide assistance in anesthesiology and surgical support for the General Surgery clinical service group as needed or instructed. * Assist faculty veterinarians with review of scientific literature and peer review publications supporting research in progress. Take measurements and collect data obtained through a variety of scientific instruments and technology. Collate and catalog data obtained through research effort, assist in retrieving archived data, and with running descriptive statistics. * Assist the teaching laboratory supervisor with establishing the instructional environment and preparing the facilities and equipment required to instruct veterinary medical students or other supported instructional laboratories. Assist as necessary with supporting College of Veterinary Medicine and departmental outreach and professional development programs including; minority student enrichment and recruiting, professional continuing education, 4-H Youth Development, and CVM Open House * Provide for safe and humane care, treatment, and maintenance of research animals assigned or being utilized or identified for use by an approved research protocol. Perform or participate in any duties assigned by proper supervisory authority, or as necessary to meet exigencies not described above. Perform other duties as assigned.
