Responsible for assisting with anesthesia, surgical support, and post-operative care of multiple species. As an integral part of the research team, the technician assists with data collection, performs data quality control checks, and assists with management of the required facility operational records in accordance with standard operating procedures and applicable regulations. Provides routine husbandry and clinical care for research animals as needed. Required Education: * Associate degree in veterinary technology, biomedical science, animal science or a related area, or any equivalent combination of relevant education and experience. Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: * Basic computer skills. Ability to multi-task and work cooperatively with others. Other Requirements or Other Factors: * Must be able to lift, bend, stoop, and stand for long periods wearing surgical attire and lead aprons, and lift up or move moderate to heavy weight unassisted. * General understanding of equipment used in a veterinary medical teaching hospital. * Must be able to distinguish colors, have good manual dexterity, and have good visually acuity and good depth perception in order to perform tasks requiring precision and dexterity. * Must be able to perform drug calculations accurately. * May require night and weekend hours. Preferred Experience: * One year experience in a veterinary medical setting. * Research experience. * Critical care experience with large animal species primarily livestock species. * Experience utilizing injectable and inhalation anesthetic regimens in large animals. * Research experience utilizing sheep and pigs. Preferred Licenses and Certifications: * Registered veterinary technician (RVT) or AAALAS technician certification (LAT). Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: * Understanding of the FDA Good Laboratory Practice Regulations (GLP) and federal Animal Welfare Regulations. * Proficiency in operation of personal computers and experience with basic operation or word processing and spreadsheet applications. * Team work, leadership, and organizational skills. Responsibilities: * Under the supervision of a Veterinary Technician II or higher, provides veterinary technical support services for preclinical studies primarily utilizing large animal species. Under supervision, assists with routine and non-routine technical procedures including, but not limited to placement and maintenance of intravenous and intra-arterial catheters, urinary catheters, endotracheal intubation, stomach tube placement, monitor critical care patients, and research related procedures. * Operates and maintains equipment used in research activities in accordance with standard operating procedures. Prepares surgical packs, operate sterilizer, and central sterile equipment. Maintains inventory and assists in ordering surgery and laboratory supplies. * Assists with administration of anesthetic agents according to approved anesthesia protocols, maintains accurate records of administration of drugs and inhalation agents, and assists with monitoring anesthesia and physiological parameters of multiple species of research animals during routine and complex procedures under the supervision of a technician II or higher. * Assists with aseptic and circulating surgical support during research and clinical cases. Performs daily observations of research animals, administer medications, treatments, and provides routine animal health care. * Assists with data collection procedures during preclinical research studies. Documents study activities, records raw data and all study findings (including deviations to protocol and SOP), and maintains operational records in compliance with the protocol, standard operating procedures, university occupational health and safety requirements, and applicable state, local, and federal regulations, and applicable international guidance documents. Perform quality control checks on raw data. * Assists with post-operative and intensive care monitoring and support for research and clinical cases including nights and weekend care as needed. * Collects biological specimen and/or performs laboratory tests in accordance with the study protocol and standard operating procedures.
