    Respiratory and Syndromic Surveillance Coordinator Apply for this job by 01/11/2019 Employer: North Dakota Department of Health Located in: Bismarck, North Dakota Degree Required: Bachelors The Respiratory and Syndromic Surveillance Coordinator is responsible for coordinating influenza program and other respiratory illness surveillance and activities. The coordinator is also responsible for administering the state's syndromic surveillance program which includes monitoring facility electronic syndromic messages, providing guidance on message composition and analyzing and interpreting syndromic data. Responsibilities for this position include: * Recruiting and retaining providers and laboratories from around the state to participate in influenza surveillance activities. * Investigating reports of influenza and influenza-like illness outbreaks and coordinating influenza specimen collection during outbreaks. * Analyzing influenza surveillance data and provide periodic updates for the Division, area providers and other stakeholders as well as prepare seasonal influenza summary reports. * Coordinating with laboratories, long-term care and health care providers to collect appropriate specimens for influenza surveillance testing at the Division of Microbiology. * Investigate and coordinate surveillance for respiratory diseases such as Legionella, Hantavirus, and reports of respiratory illness clusters. * Conduct surveillance for unusual or emerging illnesses such as acute flaccid myelitis. * Recruit facilities to send syndromic-based surveillance data to the Division of Disease Control. * Provide assistance, guidance and overall support to facilities on syndromic surveillance required data elements, messaging structure and message transport. * Develop syndromic surveillance manuals, implementation procedures and messaging guides. * Monitor data quality and completeness for syndromic surveillance messages being sent to the North Dakota Department of Health. * Create and monitor syndromic surveillance data queries. Set up, view and investigate alerts of interest. * Provide guidance to healthcare personnel, laboratories and the general public on reportable diseases. * Other duties as determined by supervisor such as; preparing program reports, disease investigation and surveillance activities, etc. A valid drivers license is required. Occasional overnight travel in and out-of-state travel may be required. Minimum Qualifications: This position requires a bachelors degree in a biological science, public/community health, epidemiology, physical science, or other related field and one year of health-related work experience. A masters degree in public health, epidemiology or related field may be substituted for the work experience requirement. Preference will be given to individuals with experience or coursework in public health practice and surveillance systems, epidemiology, informatics, working with datasets and databases, data analysis software, such as SAS, SPSS, SQL, EpiInfo, R, etc. and disease surveillance experience. Occasional overnight travel will be required. If unable to find qualified applicants, consideration will be given to underfilling this position as an Epidemiologist I, which requires a bachelors degree in a biological science, community health, epidemiology, physical science or a related field.
