The department of Labor & Industries, Division of Occupational Safety & Health (DOSH) program, Region 3, Tacoma, is searching for an Industrial Hygienist 3 to join our team. Bring your talent to L&I. We are searching for an experienced Industrial Hygienist to focus on enforcing health standards by addressing existing and potential occupational hazards that can cause serious illness and disease while maintaining composure and sensitivity during difficult conversations with employers and employees. Our ideal candidate will be able to assess exposure to noise, chemicals, blood-borne pathogens, and other physical and biological agents. It is essential that we find someone who is skilled in evaluating ventilation, confined spaces, personal protective equipment, and written health and safety programs. If selected for this position you will conduct enforcement inspections and investigations and determine compliance with standards for safety and health hazards while exercising your authority and issuing citations including orders and notices of immediate restraint. Some of what youll do: * Perform complex, technical and large-scale inspections, including accident investigations, of workplaces to determine the type and extent of chemical, biological and physical occupational health hazards. * Perform opening conferences with employer and employee representatives. Conduct walk around inspections of work sites, take field notes, photos and video, and make observations. * Conduct interviews; review safety data sheets, written safety programs, reports, and records provided by employer and employee representatives. * Prepare and calibrate industrial hygiene sampling equipment for use. * Apply techniques for analysis and measurement of noise, non-ionizing radiation, vibration, thermal stress and chemical exposure. * Determine employers compliance and non-compliance with safety and health standards and take appropriate actions consistent with laws, standards, manuals, and policies. * Critically evaluate use of protective methods, personal protective equipment, safe work practices, and engineering controls. * Prepare and present verbal and written reports of investigations. * Make suggestions for abatement and provide materials to assist with compliance. Follow up on progress and effectiveness of changes instituted. * Answer questions from the public regarding health hazards and applicable standards on the phone and in person. Who should apply? Industrial Hygienist 3 In-training A Bachelors degree involving major study in occupational safety and/or health, industrial hygiene, chemistry, physics, chemical, mechanical or sanitary engineering, environmental science, nursing, medicine, biology or related field AND 1 year of experience as an industrial hygienist, safety and health manager, safety and health consultant, or as a chemist or engineer working on environmental health or air sanitation problems. A Masters degree involving major study in industrial hygiene or related field will substitute for 1 year of experience. Industrial Hygienist 3 A Bachelors degree involving major study in occupational safety and/or health, industrial hygiene, chemistry, physics, chemical, mechanical or sanitary engineering, environmental science, nursing, medicine, biology, or related field AND 3 years of experience as an industrial hygienist. A Masters degree involving major study in industrial hygiene or related field will substitute for 1 year of industrial hygiene experience. Bilingual persons of all languages are encouraged
