The SCHOOL OF PUBLIC & COMMUNITY HEALTH SCIENCES invites applications for the position of a PEDAGOGY SPECIALIST. The role of the individual assigned to this position will be to disseminate and implement inquiry-based science curriculum modules focused on particulate matter air quality, public health, and cardiovascular health for middle and high school students in Alaska, Arizona, Idaho, Montana, and New Mexico. The person assigned to this position will also assist with the development and presentation of educator workshops, webinars, and other education/outreach activities.

The person assigned to this position will work with teachers as part of a multi-disciplinary team of University of Montana researchers, government agencies, and community partners. Finally, the individual in this position will assist with background research and preparation of manuscripts, educational/scientific presentations, and future grant applications. This position requires exceptional communication and leadership skills, the ability to work independently, and strong organizational skills.

Other JOB EXPECTATIONS for this position include, but are not limited to:

• Occasionally train and supervise undergraduate work-study students and student interns and evaluate their work performance.
• May serve as a mentor to middle school or high school students working on air quality science research projects.
• Act as a School of Public and Community Health Sciences (SPCHS) liaison to the public and private K-12 schools and may assist in the development of the community service learning component for graduate students in the Master of Public Health and Ph.D. in Public Health programs.

POSITION DETAILS

• Position is full-time, 1.0 FTE, Letter of Appointment and includes a comprehensive and competitive BENEFITS PACKAGE including Insurance package, mandatory retirement plan, partial tuition waiver, and wellness program.
• Salary for this position is $60,000 per year.

REQUIRED EDUCATION AND SKILLS

• Master of Education degree or equivalent, as well as at least five (5) years of classroom science teaching or related professional experience; or any combination of experience and education that would provide the competencies required to successfully discharge the duties assigned to this position. 
• Science teaching skills developed through classroom teaching experience; certification preferred.
• Knowledge of effective and innovative pedagogic methods through direct experience with [and/or exposure to] professional development opportunities for educators.
• General experience with different forms of air pollution with more specific knowledge of particulate matter, PM₅, pollution.
• General experience with corresponding health effects of exposure to elevated air pollution levels with more specific knowledge of the effects on the cardiovascular and respiratory systems.
• Knowledge of designing and implementing guided inquiry-based curriculum activities and experience with teaching science concepts described in the Next Generation Science Standards.
• Experience with guiding science research experiences for middle school and high school students.
• Experience implementing new procedures in an existing environment.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills and the ability to effectively interact with media when appropriate.

Preferred Qualifications

• Knowledge and experience in implementing science learning strategies in a culturally competent manner, in both formal and informal settings, in ways that encourage civic engagement on the part of young students.
• Demonstrated experience working with a variety of community partners (e.g., nonprofit organizations, citizen groups, Tribal Nations, government agencies, and public health specialists).
• Experience with supervising staff.
• Experience in higher education and working knowledge of UM.
