    1. The minimum admission GPA for this major is 2.90 on a 4.00 scale. You are meeting with a first year student and you notice that their GPA has steadily decreased over their first year and it is now below 2.90. They want to know what they can do to improve their grades. What do you hope to accomplish in your half-hour appointment with them? 2. A sophomore comes in for a 10-minute drop-in meeting in the fall. They hope to do an internship in the coming summer back in their hometown. They have just been admitted to the public relations major and is open to any PR experience this summer. How do you help the student begin to explore potential opportunities at home in 10 minutes? 3. How do you approach a student who tells you that they are interested in a journalism major but then tells you there are influential people in their life (parents, friends, etc.) who are against them pursuing the program? Department Summary The School of Journalism and Communication (SOJC) is a stand-alone accredited research and professional school serving approximately 2,200 undergraduates and 100 graduate students both on the University of Oregon campus in Eugene and at the George S. Turnbull Center in Portland. Degrees offered are the BA, BS, MA, MS and Ph.D., as well as a minor in Media Studies. The school also supports the interdisciplinary major in Cinema Studies and interdisciplinary minors in Multimedia and Native Studies. The SOJC employs approximately 125 individuals as faculty and staff, 51 graduate teaching fellows, and 50 student employees. The School is one of the oldest journalism programs in the nation, founded in 1916. Position Summary This position provides academic advising for undergraduates in the School of Journalism and Communication (SOJC); coordinates with other UO student services; assists with student recruiting, orientation sessions and commencement activities; assists the Director of Student Services and Associate Dean for Undergraduate Affairs in enrollment and registration management activities. This position also advises SOJC students seeking internships and jobs and coordinates internship/job search databases and/or announcements. In collaboration with other Career and Academic Advisers, this position handles the administrative aspect of the school's internship and career initiatives/partnerships including, but not limited to, the Portland Senior Experience. As a career coordinator, this position is part of a team that is responsible for maintaining, cultivating and expanding local, regional, national and international internship and job contacts. Duties include managing the SOJC's online internship database and increasing employer participation, serving as a point-person for current and prospective employers, and serving as liaison with campus-wide Career Center. This position works closely with other Career and Academic Advisers in Eugene and the Scholastic Journalism Coordinator in Portland, and reports to the Director of Student Services. Minimum Requirements Master's degree awarded by the time of appointment from an accredited institution. Minimum 6 months experience providing academic or career advising in a college/university setting. Minimum 6 months experience advising students from a variety of backgrounds, and with diverse academic interests and abilities. Minimum 6 months experience in coordinating and managing student services programs. Professional Competencies Demonstrated knowledge of, and ability to address the needs of undergraduate students as evidenced by written answers to supplemental questions. Strong organizational, written, oral, interpersonal and communication skills. Strong customer-service orientation. Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects. Demonstrated ability to work independently and in a team environment. Demonstrated commitment to promoting and enhancing diversity. Ability to successfully complete a criminal background check. Preferred Qualifications Master's degree in student services, higher education administration or counseling. Experience providing both career and academic advising. Experience advising pre-professional and professional school students. Experience in creating and maintaining professional networks. Experience in creating, planning and managing internship- and/or career specific programs. Ability to develop relationships with media employers to increase the diversity and quality of internship and/or job opportunities for SOJC students. Some experience in developing technology for advising uses including, but not limited to, Facebook, YouTube, podcasts, Twitter, biogs, and Linkedln. Demonstrated knowledge of the CAS standards that pertain to academic and/or career advising. Proficiency in a second language for use in outreach and retention programming with prospective students and their families.
