Department Summary The Department of Earth Sciences is an instructional department within the College of Arts and Sciences that supports significant research activities in a wide range of fields in Earth and Environmental Science. The Department includes approximately 30 faculty (including TTF and NTTF), many of whom have large research grants, 42 graduate students, 90 undergraduate majors, seven research associates, ten post-docs, two classified employees, eight student employees, emeriti faculty, and various visiting professors, courtesy professors, and career and adjunct instructors. Position Summary The University of Oregon, Department of Earth Sciences seeks a skilled field technician to pursue our mission of real-time, multi-hazards monitoring. Based in Eugene, OR, this position travels across Oregon and adjacent states to maintain and operate a monitoring system that collects scientific data to increase public safety and resiliency. We seek a technician to monitor, troubleshoot, repair, construct, install, test and maintain digital instrumentation, data telemetry infrastructure, and networking systems. This position oversees the design and maintenance of digital monitoring systems and related telemetry. We value the capacity to work independently with minimal direct supervision as well as in a highly coordinated fashion within a collegial team, both in the lab and the field. The position involves coordinating with the federal, state, and local agencies to define and employ best practices and to communicate technological innovations. Additional Expectations of the Position: Ability to carry equipment for short distances over uneven terrain. Comfortable working outdoors in adverse weather. Ability to operate 4x4 vehicle on a daily basis, often in off-road environments. Minimum Requirements B.S. in physics, engineering or natural science field. Two years of experience as an electronic technician or the equivalent experience. Professional Competencies Proven ability to work well both autonomously and in a team-oriented group. Experience working with 12VDC power systems. Knowledge of and experience with computerized databases. Knowledgeable in basic networking protocols. Preferred Qualifications Experience with seismic or related data acquisition systems. Experience climbing and working on towers (training provided, if needed). Experienced in radio telemetry systems in both the licensed and unlicensed spectrum.
