Established in 1920, the University of Washington Press supports the universitys research, education, and outreach missions by publishing important new work for an international community of scholars, students, and intellectually curious readers. As one of the largest book publishers in the Pacific Northwest, the Press also offers a broad range of regional books for general readers, often developed in partnership with museums, cultural organizations, and local indigenous communities. UW Press has an outstanding opportunity for a Reprints Coordinator and Production Assistant. This position coordinates print-on-demand (POD) printing of new titles and reprinting of backlist titles; manages ebook conversion of frontlist and backlist titles; maintains the Presss digital archive; creates cover mechanicals; performs image evaluation and editing for new books; and prepares marketing and development materials as needed. The Reprints Coordinator and Production Assistant is a 50% FTE position (20 hours/week). DUTIES AND RESPONSIBLITIES * Coordinates reprintsMaintains files of reprint corrections and flags them for attention of EDP Manager when reprinting is needed; researches and determines availability and usability of backlist files; retrieves files and makes corrections to designed book files; converts, adjusts, or re-creates cover files; orders short-run POD reprints and approves invoices; and traffics revised files to printer for offset reprinting. * Manages eBook conversion of all titlesWorks closely with EDP manager and senior project editor to order timely eBook conversions of frontlist and select backlist titles. Uploads final files for conversion upon approval of printer proofs. Tracks and troubleshoots the conversion process. Approves invoices. Uploads final eBook files and alerts Marketing and Sales Department when files are ready for distribution. Makes corrections to existing eBooks as needed. * Prepares cover mechanicalsPrepares frontlist cover mechanicals and converts existing jackets to paperback covers. * Coordinates file delivery to printers and receipt and trafficking of printer proofsTracks schedules closely and updates title management system (AllBooks) with latest dates. Orders POD frontlist books. Uploads files to Core Source and troubleshoots file problems. * Maintains and optimizes the presss digital archiveSaves final page and component files for all new and changed reprint titles; purges obsolete files to prevent mistakes and for quick and accurate retrieval of latest version. * Reviews image files for incoming book projects.Performs digital art analysis and prepares art programs of select new books, adjusting color and converting files to correct format. Assists Art Director with image research. * Prepares marketing and development materials. Assists Art Director with preparation of nonstandard marketing and development materials, including tip sheets and print ads. * Other duties as assigned REQUIREMENTS * Bachelor's degree in visual arts, graphic design, humanities or social science. * One year of professional production or design experience with books or printed materials; * Strong proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite, with focus on InDesign, Photoshop, and Illustrator; * Strong organizational skills and high level of attention to detail; * Ability and flexibility to work independently and as a team member; * Ability to meet project deadlines, organize workload, and prioritize duties in a busy environment and under pressure of overlapping deadlines. * Ability to effectively communicate with staff and outside vendors. DESIRED * Experience with book design and production; * Marketing design experience; * Ebook production experience; * Familiarity with CSS and HTML.
