The Burke Museum has an outstanding opportunity for an Assistant Outreach Coordinator (Program Assistant). The Burke Museums Bill Holm Center (BHC) Assistant Outreach Coordinator assists all planning and implementation of workshops, artist gatherings, and research visits both onsite at the Burke Museum and offsite in remote locations in Washington, Oregon, and Idaho. This includes assisting researchers and BHC Outreach Coordinators during collections visits and offsite grant programming, establishing and maintaining relationships with individuals, artists, tribal governments and arts organizations, distributing and analyzing evaluations, and helping to organize programming with BHC Outreach Coordinators. This position is dependent on grant funding. If funded the position would begin February 1, 2019 and continue through January 31, 2021. Responsibilities include but are not limited to: ACCESS TO COLLECTIONS * Assists BHC staff in preparing for and implementing Bill Holm Center onsite and offsite artist research grants and public requests from Washington, Oregon, and Idaho Native artists, including the preparation of object lists, the retrieval and re-shelving of artifacts, and assessment of collections condition. * Travel with BHC staff to remotes locations with traveling collections and/or travel to other institutions in Washington, Oregon, and Idaho with BHC grantees and staff * Assists in the facilitation of requests for access to collections from recipients of Bill Holm Center grants and public requests from Washington, Oregon, and Idaho artists, including scheduling, by tribes, researchers, scholars, and staff. * Assist Bill Holm Center staff in planning new and ongoing programs that use Burke collections for artists and tribes in Washington and Oregon tribes. * Help maintain network of and facilitates communication with tribal representatives for partnerships with tribal cultural centers and museums, with an emphasis on the Washington, Oregon, and Idaho region and organizes this information. * Help gather and collate data on Bill Holm Center grant recipients and input data into BHC spreadsheets and Margaret A. Cargill Philanthropies Dashboard. * Track hours spent by region (WA/OR/ID separate from BC/AK) so that salary percentages can be charged to corresponding budget. OUTREACH * In consultation with BHC staff, Curator and Collection Managers, select objects for outreach trips to remote locations in Washington/Oregon/Idaho. * Assist in planning and conducting outreach trips to facilitate workshops, artist gatherings, and other offsite programming in Washington/Oregon/Idaho and trips to promote workshop possibilities. * Report on activities and outcomes of research trips conducted. REPORTING * This position reports to the Director of the Bill Holm Center with duties as assigned by the Assistant Director of the Center. * This position coordinates with the Bill Holm Center Outreach Coordinators and Burke Museum Ethnology Collection Managers. Requirements & Qualifications * High school graduation or equivalent AND two years of full-time clerical experience OR equivalent education/experience * Coursework, experience, or degree in collections care and management * Knowledge of, connections to, experience with and respect for Native communities * Experience working with Native communities * Ability to appreciate divergent opinions equally and act as a liaison for multiple groups * Excellent oral and written communication skills required--ability to understand and effectively communicate about culturally sensitive issues in a respectful way * Knowledge of tribal government, cultural center, and education functions * Knowledge of history and cultures of Native groups with an emphasis on Washington State and the Pacific Northwest * Knowledge of related laws, museum professional ethics and trends in relationships and programs * Skills in collecting and managing information from multiple sources * Ability to apply knowledge of museum collections and multiple external entities to develop relationships and partnerships that mutually benefit the Museum and constituents on a long-term basis Desired * Advanced degree highly preferred Conditions of Employment * Ability to travel by car and plane for offsite programming and outreach * Open to an alternative schedule that occasionally involves flexing schedule to work on weekends The University of Washington is a leader in environmental stewardship & sustainability, and committed to becoming climate neutral.
