Cloud Engineer Intern Position Summary: Vanderbilt University
Information Technology (VUIT) has an exciting opportunity for a Cloud
Engineer Intern. This Cloud Engineer Internship is an opportunity for
college juniors, seniors, and graduate students interested in obtaining
personal exposure in higher education by serving in an internship
allowing the individual to gain broad exposure to and develop a better
understanding of the variety of operations and services within the
defined department at Vanderbilt. The focus of this internship will be
on engineering and administration of cloud computing data analytics
tools, as well as Cloud engineering and deployment with Amazon Web
Services (AWS.) This will include, but is not limited to, provisioning
servers (EC2 Instances), provisioning storage (S3 Buckets), and
provisioning Virtual Private Clouds and RDS. About the Work Unit:
The Cloud Services work unit provides enterprise cloud services to the
institution by leveraging leading edge cloud computing technologies,
tools, and techniques for cloud workload provisioning. The work unit
acts as a cloud services consultant and broker for infrastructure,
platform, and software- as-a-service (IaaS, PaaS, and SaaS) offerings
for the various entities across the institution. The unit leverages
leading public cloud services providers such as Amazon Web Services
(AWS) and Microsoft Azure as a part of its strategy for IaaS and PaaS
cloud deployments. The unit also implements hybrid and private cloud
deployment models for on-premises workloads not suitable for public
cloud. Key Functions and Expected Performance: * Design, build,
and maintain infrastructure and software platforms within cloud based
environments (i.e. AWS, Azure) using public cloud service models
infrastructure-as-a-service and platform-as-a-service offerings. *
Migrate existing on-premises services from physical data centers to
cloud using cloud migration and automation tools. * Write scripts to
automate operations and server management. * Maintain QA and Production
configuration using automation tools. * Build and maintain operations
tools for monitoring, notifications, trending, and analysis. * Define,
create, test, and execute operations procedures. * Troubleshoot
production issues and re-engineer production workloads. * Work
comfortably with automation and orchestration software. Experience
and Education****: * Currently enrolled in Undergraduate or Masters
program within Computer Science, Management Information Systems,
Computer Engineering, or related field. Hark Skill Qualifications:
- Studied/Knowledge of Linux/Unix operating systems * Studied/Knowledge
of cloud computing and IaaS/PaaS cloud providers services, i.e. Amazon
Web Services, Google Compute Platform, Microsoft Azure *
Studied/Knowledge of Apache web server technologies * Studied/Knowledge
of data analytics, database administration, data structures *
Studied/Knowledge of coding/scripting i.e. PHP, Python, Java, Bash, Perl
- Studied/Knowledge of continuous integration, deployment and release
management * Strong desire to learn new technologies and explore new and
creative ways to solve problems Desired Skill Qualifications: *
Experience with Linux/Unix operating systems * Experience with cloud
computing and IaaS/PaaS cloud providers services, i.e. Amazon Web
Services, Google Compute Platform, Microsoft Azure * Experience with
data analytics, database administration, data structures * Experience
with scripting i.e. Python, Bash, Perl * Experience with continuous
